If your pond or lake water looks like pea soup or spilled paint right now, it could be blue-green algae, and this is exactly the time of year to know the warning signs. Blue-green algae, also called cyanobacteria, peaks in August when water is warm and nutrient levels are high, and it can appear bright green, blue-green, or even reddish-brown floating on the surface.

This isn't like typical pond algae. Not all algae in your pond or lake is the same, and knowing what you're looking at makes a big difference in how it should be treated. Planktonic algae turns the water green, brown, or reddish and can bloom fast in warm weather. Filamentous algae forms long, hair-like strands that mat together and float to the surface. Chara and Nitella grow along the bottom and are often mistaken for rooted plants, while Lyngbya and starry stonewort can form thick, stubborn mats that are especially tough to manage once established. If you're seeing a bloom that looks like pea soup or spilled paint, keep people and pets away and give us a call, since that can be a sign of blue-green algae, which needs a different approach than typical nuisance algae.
