Summer is the perfect time to check in about screen time and use. Balance is key.

I recently attended a virtual parenting teen summit and one workshop focused on technology and its impact on 🧠 brains. The neuroscience offers these best practices:
-screen free the first hour and last hour of the day. Brains need time to wake up and wind down. She also mentioned watching a show in the evening is fine - preferably one with a beginning, middle, and end plot line.

-For every hour on a screen for work or leaning, take a 15 minute break and engage in-person experiences: get a drink of water, have a small chat with someone, stand outside.

-Double in-person play after technology entertainment. The doctor gave the example of her son online gaming for an hour and then having to play basketball with friends outside for two hours.

These research-based guidelines have been so helpful personally. Tech is part of our lives - we just need to be mindful about how much it is part of our daily living with ourselves and kids.

How does screen time in infancy relate to brain development and anxiety in adolescence?

A recent long‑term observational cohort study looked at infant screen time, brain imaging scans between the ages of 4 to 7, decision-making behavior at 8 years old, and anxiety symptoms at age 13.

The study found that infants with higher amounts of screen time displayed accelerated brain development patterns, slower decision-making skills in childhood, and increased levels of anxiety in adolescence.

Hey y’all! ~ BOOK NEWS IS HERE!

I’m so excited to share that my first book, The Neurodivergent Learner, is now available for preorder.

Over the last 20 years, I’ve collaborated with families and teachers working alongside children who are autistic, gifted, have ADHD, or simply learn differently. I’ve walked this path as both a parent and a clinician and I can’t wait to share all I’ve learned with you.

My hope is that this book will provide parents and educators of neurodivergent children with the tools they need to help every child thrive in—and beyond—the classroom.

Everyone who preorders my book will get a bonus offer! Be sure to subscribe to my Substack newsletter for details on bonus items coming later this week. (Link below and in my bio)

Preorders are super helpful for first-time authors like me. Your preorder is a vote of confidence in my work that will help other families find my book. Preorder sales also signal to bookstores to stock more books like mine, so everyone can access important information like this.

The Neurodivergent Learner will be on shelves August 25, 2026. Click on the link below or in my bio to order your copy!

New opportunities to foster belonging in schools create pure excitement for me. I am truly grateful for new curriculum development opportunity for K-8 learners.

This new project will focus on affective statements, which are powerful, informal statements. They name feelings and establish boundaries in just one sentence.

I feel _______ when ___________ (behavior).

Let's practice a few positive affective statements:

I feel joy when _________________.

I feel relaxed when __________________.

I feel content when ___________________.

I feel excited when new opportunities to support students are presented.

Affective statements can be paired with memes to get the conversations started, with learners of all ages!

What is something that brings out your excitement? Comment below with an affective statement.

There are many thinking skills involved in completing a task - from planning what is needed to knowing where to begin. Ex*****on functioning skills develop over time and they develop at different rates. It is important to know they are skills - skills that can be learned and developed just like academic skills.

ā˜€ļø Every child has strengths. Let's help them find theirs this summer. ā˜€ļø

Too often, the world is quick to tell kids what they need to "fix." This summer, flip the playbook. Give your child the data, confidence, and vocabulary to own who they uniquely are. šŸš€

I am launching a comprehensive suite of summer workshop series built entirely on positive youth development frameworks:

4 Programs. Ages 5-18. Science-backed. Strengths-based.

Whether you have an early learner exploring through sensory play, a middle-schooler identifying their interests, or a teenager ready to rewrite the rules of leadership—I have an intentional, interactive track waiting for them.
