The presence of the invasive emerald ash borer (EAB) has been confirmed in Jack, Navarro, Somervell, Bell, and Rockwall counties. Bell County’s confirmation makes it the southernmost confirmed location of EAB in the nation.

EAB is one of the worst invasive insects to impact American forests, as all species of ash trees are susceptible to infestation. Larval EAB feed in the phloem of branches and trunks, preventing nutrients from being transported from the leaves to the rest of the tree. Tree mortality can occur five to six years after the beetle is introduced.

Symptoms of infestation may include dead branches near the top of a tree, leafy shoots sprouting from the trunk, bark splits exposing s-shaped larval galleries, extensive woodpecker activity, and d-shaped exit holes.

EAB do not fly long distances naturally, so their spread is often human caused. Texans can prevent the spread of EAB and other invasive insects and diseases by not moving firewood from where it was purchased. Home and landowners can minimize the spread by diversifying tree and plant species on the property by planting no more than 10% of any one species, 20% of any one genus, or 30% of any one family.

Recent storms have been impacting many areas throughout the state. Pictured is a cottonwood in Lipan following a lightning strike. After storms, your first thought might be to clean up debris and damage as soon as possible. However, hasty decisions could result in removing trees that could be saved.

First, make an assessment of whether or not your tree can be saved by asking these questions: Other than the storm damage, is the tree healthy and structurally sound? Are major limbs broken? Has the central leader, or main upward-growing stem, been lost? Is at least 50% of the tree’s crown, the branches and leaves, still intact? How large are the wounds from broken branches or damaged bark? Are there remaining branches that can develop a new branch structure? Is the tree a desirable species for its location?

After answering those questions, you can categorize the tree’s damage to determine what type of action needs to be taken. If you determine your tree can be saved, and could use a little TLC, remember:
🌳Do not try to do it all yourself. Large or high hanging branches are a job for an ISA certified arborist.
🌳Be alert for powerlines and dangerous hanging branches.
🌳Remove any broken branches still attached to the tree.
🌳Repair torn bark.
🌳Resist the urge to over prune.
🌳Do not top your tree.

Something we see done incorrectly far too often! Mulch mounded at the base of a tree often causes rotting issue that trees have a hard time healing and can lead to premature death. The diagram above is proper technique and your trees greatly benefit from it!

🌱 Just like you, trees need to breathe! Don’t suffocate your tree with a mulch volcano. Improper mulching keeps water trapped against the trunk and creates an environment ripe for fungi and bacteria, which can cause your tree to die.
🌳 As Texas trees have seen multiple stress events over the past few years, applying a thin layer of mulch is one of the best and most affordable maintenance practices to help them out.
💧 When applied and maintained correctly, mulch can conserve water, regulate soil temperatures, reduce competition from other plants and improve soil health.
🌲 Use an organic mulch and apply a thin layer (no more than 3 inches) underneath the canopy. Be careful not to let the mulch touch the base of the trunk. Avoid over-mulching and piling mulch against the trunk.
