🇨🇺 ROSY’S CUBANISM OF THE DAY: MATRACA
Growing up in Boston, every summer we’d go to Miami to visit family, load up on Cuban food, and buy enormous bags of rice to haul back home like there was no rice north of Hialeah. 😂
One of my cousins, Joaquinito—Jack—was a couple of years older than me, and he had a motorcycle.
Well, 16-year-old Rosy HAD to get on that motorcycle.
Every. Single. Day.
“Can I go on Jack’s motorcycle?”
No.
“But I’ll be careful.”
No.
“But we’ll just go down the street.”
“¡DEJA LA MATRACA, QUE ME TIENES HASTA LA CORONILLA!”
Translation: Stop pestering me before you drive me completely insane. 😂
Then one day Mima and Pipo left me at my aunt’s house while they went shopping.
You already know where this is going.
I convinced Jack to take me out on the motorcycle. We weren’t going anywhere! Just up and down the street in front of the house in Hialeah.
And just as Jack was doing a wheelie…
Guess who pulled up?
MIMA AND PIPO.
They had forgotten something and turned around.
After days of dar la matraca about that motorcycle, they came back to find their 16-year-old daughter ON IT, in the middle of the street, with her cousin doing a wheelie.
I’m pretty sure at that moment la matraca became the least of my problems. 😂😂😂
🇨🇺 MATRACA — relentless pestering, nagging, or going on and on about something.
And yes… sometimes the person giving the matraca eventually gets what she wants.
She just might wish her parents hadn’t come home early. 😂
