🇨🇺 Rosy's CUBANISM OF THE DAY: ÑOÑO / ÑOÑA

Growing up, Mima was always telling me:

“Rosy, no seas ñoña.” 😂

In our house, being ñoña meant you were being a little too spoiled, too babyish, or making a fuss over something you should just get on with.

And a ñoño? Think mama’s boy. 😂

Mima still uses it exactly the same way.

Complaining too much?

“No seas ñoña.”

Being a little bratty?

“No seas ñoña.”

Expecting everyone to fuss over you?

“¡Ay, Rosy, no seas tan ñoña!” 😂

There are some Cuban words that don’t need a definition. You just have to hear your mother say them in the right tone and suddenly you know EXACTLY what they mean. 🇨🇺😂

It’s very raw, very real, and very me — It will be Cuban stories, laughs, chisme, food, sayings, family craziness and whatever else I decide to talk about that day. 🇨🇺😂

🇨🇺 Rosy's CUBANISM OF THE DAY: ROÑA

“Me da roña.”

If you grew up Cuban, you may have heard roña used when someone or something gets under your skin, irritates you, or just gets on your last nerve. 😂

And right now, I have a perfect example.

There’s a lady at Mima’s assisted living facility who, for whatever reason, cannot stand me. 😂

Every time she sees me, she starts.

She yells at me.
She tells me to leave because she doesn’t want to see me.

And the minute I spot her coming...

Ay. Me da una roña. 😂😂😂

But I never say anything back. Her caregiver is always apologizing to me, and I suspect the poor woman may have dementia or something else going on. So I smile, keep walking, and remind myself that she probably can't help it.

But understanding WHY someone does something doesn't mean they can't still give you roña. 😂

So tell me...

🇨🇺 CUBANISM OF THE DAY: “La cosa está pelúa.”

No, nobody needs a haircut. 😂

When a Cuban tells you “la cosa está pelúa,” it means things are rough, complicated, difficult… or not looking too good.

Bills piling up?
La cosa está pelúa.

Your car needs a $6,000 repair?
La cosa está PELÚA. 😩😂

Your mother says, “Tenemos que hablar…”?
Ay, mi vida… la cosa está peludísima. 😂

Technically it comes from peluda, but you know how we Cubans are… that D never stood a chance. 😂🇨🇺

🇨🇺 Rosy's CUBANISM OF THE DAY: CHUECO / CHUECA

Chueco — crooked, bent, lopsided, or just… not quite straight. 😂

And apparently, according to Mima, it also applies to the residents at her assisted living facility.
Yesterday she was telling me about one of los viejos — because remember, Mima is 91, but somehow everyone else who lives there is viejo. She, apparently, is not. 😂

She was describing one of the men and said:

“Ese pobre viejo camina todo chueco.”

I said, “Mima… he’s probably your age.”

That information was neither requested nor appreciated. 😂😂😂

If you grew up Cuban, you probably heard chueco for everything: a picture hanging crooked, glasses sitting sideways, someone walking funny…

¿En tu casa decían CHUECO? 🇨🇺

Buenos Dias mi gente! Nobody Warned Them About the Colada! Every Cuban has watched this happen. 😂 Someone looks at the tiny cup and says "that's it?"... and two hours later they're reorganizing your garage.
We've been drinking it since we were kids, so we're immune. Everyone else? Pray for them. ☕🇨🇺
