Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was a trailblazing civil rights leader and clergyman who dedicated his life to the fight for racial equality and justice. Tragically, he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968, bringing an end to his nonviolent crusade for civil rights.
"His leadership was fundamental to that movement’s success in ending the legal segregation of African Americans in the South and other parts of the United States," says Britannica.
King's death sent shockwaves across the nation, fueling a year of social upheaval marked by race riots and anti-war protests.
