Why is the nursing world so short staffed? (Nursing home version) Maybe because the state says it's okay for a nurse to have 35 patients to care for and a cna to have 20 to take care of. How is that even possible? And let me enlighten all of you who live in the dark. Nursing homes are now rehab centers. Not only do they have your cute little grandma , they have dementia patients, surgery rehab patients, drug rehab patients and psych patients all mixed together. Patients who have open sores and wounds, patients who take 25 pills at once, patients who take 2 to 3 staff members just to move them from the bed to the chair, patients who are constantly looking for a door to leave, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Staff get screamed at, hit, spit on and belittled by not only the patients but by their family members too. You are asked daily to accomplish the impossible, you are questioned daily why certain things haven't gotten done, you are questioned daily as to why Mr. Smith's call bell has been going off for 7 mins now while you are literally in a room caring for another patient, you hear someone from the office yelling down the hall where are all the staff( while you are literally in a room giving care to a patient), you are asked daily to stay and work another shift and when you say no thanks they say out loud, I don't understand why no one wants to stay and work, and god forbid you tell them why because then you're being insubordinate. You don't get a lunch break most of the time. You get phone calls and texts at least 2 times a week asking you to pick up more shifts. You very rarely as a nurse are able to walk out the door at the time your shift ends due to the endless charting and phone calls you have to make. You don't get a yearly raise and when you ask about it all they can say is I wish I had an answer for you. You all get paid the same whether you have 25 years experience under your belt and you've been dedicated to the facility or you are brand new out of class and just walked in the door. You are ending your shift and ready to walk out the door and someone tells you sorry but we know you came in today but unfortunately you have been mandated and you'll be here another 8 hours. These are a few of the reasons nursing staff is leaving the healthcare field and are going to work at other places. Staff go home mentally and physically exhausted and it affects our home life. Keep this in the back of your mind and think twice about being rude to the nursing staff next time you find yourself or your family needing medical care. 💗
