October is almost full.

I keep my calendar to just a handful of sessions each month so every family gets my full attention.

Fall and winter newborn, maternity, and family sessions are open right now, but not for long. Whatever season of your family you're in, expecting, brand new, or somewhere in the toddler chaos, there's a spot for it this fall.

A family reached out a few weeks ago hoping to book a September date, and I was already booked. 😢

I typically fill up 8+ weeks out, which is exactly why I tell people August and early September, not October, is when to reach out.

Fall dates go fast because everyone wants the same handful of golden-hour evenings, and I only work with one family at a time so nothing feels rushed.

If you have a date in mind, this is the week to lock it in.

September starts tomorrow, and fall is no longer "coming soon" - it is here. 🍂

Right now I am booking fall newborn sessions, maternity sessions, family portraits, milestone sessions (hello, sitter stage and first birthdays), and winter due dates through the end of the year.

August is almost gone, and fall books faster than any season I photograph.

The magic is never in the perfectly posed, everyone-looking-at-the-camera shot. It is in the mid-giggle. The kid running toward the camera instead of standing still. The little sister who will not stop looking at her big brother instead of me. If you have young kids and you are dreading the "get everyone to cooperate" part of family photos - let that go. Some of my favorite images from every single session are the ones nobody could have planned.

Golden hour, that soft, warm light in the hour before sunset, is what makes fall portraits look the way they do. It is also the most requested time slot of the entire season, so those weekday evening spots go first (I shoot Monday through Friday, no weekends).

If you have a date in mind, before a birthday, before a trip, before the holidays, the earlier you reach out, the more likely we can build the session around it.

The number one question before every family session: what do we wear?

Choose a color palette, not matching outfits. Soft neutrals, warm tones, dusty blues and greens all photograph beautifully in our fall light. Skip busy patterns and bright logos - they pull attention from faces.

Mix textures - a linen shirt, a flowy dress, a soft knit - so the group looks coordinated, not costumed. I walk every family through this so nobody shows up stressed about outfits.

Twenty years in, and the moments that still stop me are the ones I could never direct.

A big sister meeting her baby brother for the first time. A dad who does not know his own face is doing something so tender. A mama who forgets I am even in the room. I cannot pose those. I can only be ready for them. That readiness - knowing exactly when to press the shutter and when to just wait - is the part of this job that twenty years actually built.

If you are lying awake tonight running through everything that could go wrong at your upcoming session, I want you to hear this from someone who has done this for twenty years: I have never once had a session derailed by a tired parent or an unpredictable baby. Not once.

A fussy stretch, a mid-session feeding, a mama who has not showered - these are not problems. These are just what newborn sessions actually look like, underneath the pretty photos you see online. You just have to show up. I handle everything else.
