The mistake many people make is assuming the goals they achieve is more significant than the process getting there. Typically, when you reach a goal, you receive a reward. For example, if you work towards a degree, you are then presented a diploma in the end. Whether it is monetary, getting extra recognition, or a simple high five, rewards sometimes make us lose sight of what is most important.
What is important are the lessons and skills learned along the way in order to successfully achieve that goal. It is amazing that you received that promotion or completed your degree, but it is even more rewarding that you are now fulfilled with the experiences and knowledge to get there.
Goals keep us motivated, accountable, create a sense of self-worth, and gives us direction in life. Never stop making goals for yourself, but do keep in mind that the path to achieving your goals is more important than the reward in the end. Or as Henry David Thoreau says:
"What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.
