Friday Freebie - An essential function of a job will determine if you can require an employee to undergo a medical exam. If you have an older employee with balance problems that can't climb ladders and it poses a direct safety threat, a medical exam is necessary. If it is not a safety threat, don't hold the employee to a higher standard based on age - or to a lower one either.

The question of whether an individual owns a car is irrelevant, unless the position requires an employee to use his or her personal vehicle to travel between worksites, or other locations, as a PRIMARY job duty. Whether candidates use public transportation, bike, carpool, or drive to work really has no bearing on how they will perform in the job.
