One thing I think a lot of contractors miss when talking about retention is that retention does not start when someone wants to quit.

It starts with how your people feel every day they show up to work.

Pay matters. Benefits matter. But so do the little things.

Good PPE. Good workwear. Quality hydration products. Boots that aren’t falling apart. Gloves that actually fit. Safety equipment people trust. Gear that makes the job easier instead of harder.

The brand itself is not really the point.

The point is finding companies that genuinely care about the people using their products and building relationships with those brands that help your crew feel valued, protected, and appreciated.

Your field guys notice more than you think.

They notice when their hard hat is beat up and nobody cares.
They notice when their vest is worn out.
They notice when the company invests in them.
And they definitely notice when it doesn’t.

Sometimes retention is not another pizza party.

Sometimes it’s taking the time to make sure the people building your projects have the equipment, support, and resources they deserve.

Union jobs:
$60–$90/hr total package in certain regions

Non-union shutdown/per diem work:
$2,000–$4,000+ weeks aren’t rare right now

The wild part?
Most people outside the trades have zero clue how different the pay gets depending on region, unions, travel work, cranes, dirt, mining, pipeline, quarry, or data center site work.

A 23-year-old on a blade in one state can be making more than someone with a degree somewhere else.

A lot of people ask what electricians are actually making in Texas right now, and the truth is… it depends heavily on the path you choose and the sacrifice you’re willing to make.

Right now, a pretty realistic range looks something like this:

• Non-union electricians: roughly $25–$38/hr full benefits, OT, PTO

• Union electricians (IBEW): around $38–$55/hr total package, with take-home often landing closer to $35–$45/hr depending on local, benefits, overtime, and per diem

And those numbers can climb even higher on industrial, mission critical, shutdown, and travel work.

The bigger point is this:

There’s no single “best” route.

Some people value benefits and structure.
Some value flexibility and mobility.
Some want local work.
Some are willing to travel and sacrifice more for higher income.

The trades are wide open right now, but the people making the most of it are the ones who understand which lane fits their life best.
