America is on the Couch More Than Ever (and It’s Not Just to Watch Netflix)

I am happy to report that studies show the number of U.S. adults getting psychotherapy went up—more people are talking it out, not just popping pills (solo use of psychotropic meds declined and therapy-only use increased, while med-only use dropped). Combo treatment (meds + therapy)- pretty stable, like your therapist wants you to be.

Interesting fact: psychiatrists and psychologists are doing less of the talking, while social workers and counselors have picked up the slack. Telehealth probably helped too—during the pandemic, many people discovered you can cry over Zoom. In 2021, nearly 40% of therapy patients had at least one video session. No pants? No problem.

Sadly enough, on average, each visit still costs about $197, which is either a bargain or a horror, depending on your deductible.
Noteworthy changes:

Bottom line: Americans are leaning more on conversation than prescriptions, social workers are stepping up, and therapy's popularity (and price tag) is on the rise. In short, therapy is trending.

Staying in touch—without hovering—can help them feel grounded and remind them they’re not alone as they navigate academic pressures, social shifts, and personal growth. A simple check-in, a thoughtful message, or just being available to listen can go a long way in helping them adjust and thrive during this significant transition.

The Penn State Student Affairs Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH) 2023 Annual Report illustrates the top concerns of college students aged 18-60 seeking counseling:

Anxiety is the most prevalent concern, affecting 66% of students seeking counseling.
Stress (47%), depression (45%), and academic performance (44%) are also major concerns.
Trauma (21%) and adjustment to a new environment (16%) are less frequent but still significant issues.
The data was collected from 735 colleges and universities that were CCMH members during the 2022-2023 academic year.
