EEEEKK… wages are going up AGAIN?!

Yep. If you own a salon in New Jersey, I don't want January 1st to roll around and THEN have you wondering what this increase is going to do to your numbers.

Starting January 1, 2027, New Jersey's minimum wage increases to $16.48/hour for most employees and $16.25/hour for small employers with fewer than six employees.

My smaller salon owners, I especially want you paying attention.

That small-employer rate is going from $15.23 to $16.25.

That's a $1.02/hour increase.

One employee working 40 hours a week? That's approximately $2,122 more per year in wages alone.

Now multiply that by however many employees you have. It doesn't necessarily stop with wages. Your total payroll-related costs can increase too. You may also need to look at what you're paying your more experienced stylists and employees so your entire pay structure still makes sense.

This is exactly why I don't want you waiting until January, ripping out your gorgeous hair and asking, "What the heck?! How are we going to afford this?"

I want you to know NOW:

How much additional revenue does your salon need to bring in to absorb the increase?

Do you need to adjust pricing?

Does your average ticket need to increase?

Are your chairs producing what they need to produce?

Is payroll where it should be?

Are there expenses quietly eating away at your profit?

These are the conversations we can have BEFORE there's a problem, because I know most salon owners did not get into this business because they love sitting around calculating break-even points, so I made you a little something.

It will help you see what your salon needs to bring in each month to cover its expenses and what happens to that number when your costs increase.

And PLEASE hear me on this part:

🚨 FLORIDA SALON OWNERS: September 30th is coming — but have you actually run the numbers?

Florida’s minimum wage increases from $14 to $15 per hour on September 30, 2026.

And while $1 more per hour may not sound like a huge change, I want salon owners to look beyond that $1.

Because your actual question shouldn’t be:

“How much more am I paying per hour?”

It should be:

“How much more revenue does my salon need to produce to absorb this increase?”

Think about it.

If you have assistants, receptionists, shampoo staff, hourly stylists or other employees affected by the increase, you’re not just looking at the additional hourly wage.

You’re also looking at the payroll costs tied to those wages.

And then there’s something else owners sometimes overlook…

What happens to the employee who was already making $15 or $16 an hour?

If a newer or less experienced employee is suddenly earning almost the same amount, you may decide that other wages need to move too.

Now that $1 increase can start moving through your entire payroll.

This is why I want salon owners looking at the numbers BEFORE September 30 — not after the first higher payroll hits the bank account.

Ask yourself:

✂️ What will my new monthly payroll actually be?

✂️ How much additional revenue do I need to cover it?

✂️ What does each chair need to produce?

✂️ Are my service prices and margins still working?

✂️ Are there positions or hours that aren’t generating enough revenue to support their cost?

✂️ Can my current cash flow comfortably absorb the change?

A wage increase doesn’t automatically mean you need to raise your prices.

But it does mean you need to know your numbers before deciding what to do next.

That’s the difference between bookkeeping that simply tells you what happened…

and having someone in your corner helping you figure out what happens next.

One thing at a time.

I didn’t realize how much I needed to read those words today.

I had just finished an AMAZING meeting - one that opened the door to another income stream for my business. I was excited. I was taking notes. My brain was going a mile a minute thinking about all the possibilities.

Then the meeting ended.

I closed my notebook, took a deep breath and immediately thought…

How the heck am I going to do all of this?! BY MYSELF?!

Because outside of being a business owner, I’m a mom. A wife. A friend. A coworker. A soccer mom. And like so many of you, I wear a LOT of hats.

Then I looked down.
“one thing at a time.”

Okay. Message received. 😂

And just like that, my brain went from “OH CRAP” to “Okay…let’s make a list.”

Because the truth is, we can have 47 things on the list—but we can only tackle the one in front of us.

One bill at a time.
One call at a time.
One post at a time.
One reconciliation at a time.
One report at a time.
One soccer game at a time.
One dinner at a time.
And then we move on to the next.

That’s something I’m constantly reminded of by the friend who gave me this notebook - who also happens to be my business coach. She challenges me. She listens to my crazy ideas. She encourages me. And yes, she calls me out on my BS when I need it. 😂

And maybe that’s why this little notebook hit differently today.

Sometimes you don't need to do more. You need someone to help you figure out what comes next.

That's a huge part of what we do at CMR Bookkeeping LLC

Yes, we do bookkeeping.

But sometimes the solution is cash flow.
Sometimes it's getting the bills under control.
Sometimes it's cleaning up a backlog.
Sometimes it's creating a process.
