Growth Happens When You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
There’s a quote that resonated deeply with me today: “Growth happens when you do things you feel unqualified to do.” It struck a chord, especially as my husband and I have been having conversations about career transitions and what comes next for us. At 50, society often nudges us toward thoughts of retirement, but instead, we’re feeling a pull toward reinvention. The question is—if not now, when?
The fear of change can be paralyzing. It’s easy to stay in the comfort of what we know, where we are qualified, where our expertise is recognized. My years in education have placed me in roles where I feel confident, where I understand my value. Yet, my interests extend beyond that field—into areas where I may not have the traditional credentials but where my experiences, passion, and transferable skills hold significant weight.
The truth is, change is hard. But change is also necessary for growth. Growth doesn’t come from standing still; it comes from taking that leap into the unknown, from being willing to learn, to adapt, and to challenge ourselves in new ways. If I were hiring someone today, I wouldn’t solely focus on their qualifications on paper—I’d look at their passion, their drive, their willingness to show up and give it their all. Experience and determination often outweigh a perfect resume.
Writing for SpurScribe has given me a unique opportunity to connect with individuals who feel nervous about taking the next step in their careers. Through storytelling and shared experiences, I’ve been able to encourage others to embrace change, trust in their abilities, and take action. I understand that networking outside of one’s niche can feel intimidating, but I am here to support those who are figuring out how to expand their reach and build meaningful connections. Whether it's through refining their messaging, identifying new opportunities, or simply offering reassurance, I want to help others see the potential in their journey.
So, if you’re contemplating a career move, launching a business, or stepping into a new industry, don’t let fear hold you back. Get out there. Network. Apply for roles that excite you, even if you don’t check every box on the job description. Reach out to people who can offer guidance. You won’t know what’s possible until you take that first step.
The time to start is now. Don’t wait.
