HELLO JUNE 👋

Hello friends. Welcome to a new month. After 5 years of serving the African Student Association at The University of Alabama I'm stepping down as the faculty advisor. It's been a joy and privilege to support five administrations over the course of my tenure.

In my book I talk about a principle I call conscientious offloading. Basically, it's posits that before taking on additional responsibilities, we must assess our commitments and determine what we can let go in order to receive new opportunities.

If you are like me, I don't believe in holding titles for the sake of the title. I believe in contributing significantly to whatever I commit myself. I want to thank the the African Student Association for entrusting me with such a privilege and I look forward to continuing this important work, just in a different capacity.

Today I did a hard thing...

I said bye to our faculty and students as they head to Zambia 🇿🇲 for our yearly education abroad trip. We have 20 students and three faculty going this year. This is the first time in 10 years (except during COVID-19) that I'm not going on this trip. It got me a little emotional but I'm grateful that we have highly competent and experienced faculty leading this year. Thank you to Lauren Kyzar Gray and Hood Akers for taking on this important work.

Today I was reminded about something one of my mentors liked telling me... the hallmark of a great mentor is when the people we mentor achieve greater heights than we did ourselves. It makes me feel blessed to see how well our faculty at Capstone College of Nursing are leading these education abroad trips, building meaningful partnerships, and elevating our global impact.

I'm truly honored to work alongside such exceptional nurse leaders Carrie Henry Alyssa Neal Jones Heather Simmons Cole Kate Griffith McConathy Linda Paradise Lee Bratcher Oliver.
