When disaster strikes, every member of the family matters—including our pets. Recent disasters have shown how quickly families can become separated from beloved animals during emergencies.

To help keep your pets safe, include them in your family's disaster preparedness plan:

✅ Keep a current photo of you with your pet for identification purposes.

✅ Save copies of vaccination and medical records in a waterproof container or digital format.

✅ Have leashes, harnesses, carriers, and identification tags readily available.

✅ Prepare a Pet Emergency Kit with:
• Medications
• Non-perishable food and treats
• Water and bowls
• Cat litter and litter pan
• Waste bags
• Favorite blanket or bedding
• Toys and comfort items

✅ Identify a safe room in your home where your family and pets can shelter together.

✅ Arrange with a trusted neighbor, family member, or friend to care for your pets if you're away from home during an emergency.

✅ Establish a reunification plan and meeting location.

✅ Never allow pets to roam freely in damaged areas after a disaster.

⚠️ Remember: Many emergency shelters cannot accommodate pets, so it's important to identify pet-friendly shelters, hotels, boarding facilities, or friends and family who can assist before disaster strikes.

A little planning today can help ensure your furry family members stay safe tomorrow.

One conversation changed the way I view emergency management forever.

At the IAEM EMvision Talks, I shared the story of an elderly woman I met after a tornado devastated her community in Tuscaloosa County. Her words, “I didn’t know it was coming,” became the driving force behind my mission to make preparedness accessible for everyone, not just those with resources.

This talk focuses on equity in emergency management, breaking down barriers to communication, and ensuring people can hear, trust, and act on emergency warnings before disaster strikes.

Preparedness should never be a privilege.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support this mission and the work we are doing through CivicCore Solutions.

🌬️ Top 6 Winter Energy-Wasting Mistakes

Yes, the weather outside may be cold, but your winter energy bills don’t have to be. These common wintertime mistakes can cost you money and leave your home feeling colder than it should. Here are six energy-wasting habits to avoid and how to fix them.

1. NOT HAVING YOUR HEATING SYSTEM CHECKED
▪️Make sure your system is running safely
▪️Clean parts that affect performance
▪️Catch issues before they cause a breakdown in the coldest weather

2. FORGETTING ABOUT YOUR THERMOSTAT
▪️Turn the temperature down when you’re asleep or away
▪️Use a smart thermostat to automatically adjust based on your schedule
▪️Small temperature adjustments can lead to noticeable savings.

3. IGNORING COLD DRAFTS
Some rooms feel colder because cold air sneaks in through:
▪️Older windows
▪️Gaps around doors
▪️Openings where wiring or pipes enter the home
▪️Leaks from the attic or basement

4. LETTING WARM AIR ESCAPE THROUGH THE CHIMNEY
To prevent heat loss:
▪️Keep the damper closed when the fireplace is not in use
▪️Ensure the flue damper seals properly
▪️Consider installing tempered glass doors or a heat-exchange insert

5. NOT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF SUNLIGHT
On sunny winter days:
▪️Open blinds and curtains on south-facing windows
▪️Let the sun warm your rooms
▪️Close window coverings at night to hold in heat

6. OVERUSING SPACE HEATERS
They work best for short-term use in small areas like:
▪️A cold basement
▪️A garage workspace
