Sheepdog Strong

Sheepdog Strong This page promotes the brotherhood of Sheepdogs through community information, general musings, and fitness concepts for the Tactical Athlete.

Sheepdog Strong promotes functional fitness concepts specific to those serving in the Military (Active or Retired), Law Enforcement, and Firefighting communities. But furthermore, Sheepdog Strong promotes and supports this community of men and women. While functional programs stress and strengthen the entire body, making one more ready to optimally perform their job, we believe that fitness itself

also strengthens the mind. It is often through shared struggle that people come together, even if that struggle is only in a gym environment. And through that shared struggle, people come together in support of one another. This is community. Sheepdog Strong intends to nurture that environment. While the website (www.sheepdogstrong.com) will contain most of the fitness information specific to this community, this page will support this community through shared experiences and news. “Never forget” means more than a memory. It means we must always be ready to defend our families and fellow countrymen from further attacks. It took the terrible loss of life on 9/11 to remind us of this, and we can’t let that happen again. Train your body, discipline your mind, and live for those that sacrificed everything. Only in that way can we never forget.

There’s a lot of reasons to slow down, skipping a workout or whatever it is you know is good for your mental and physical health. This is the time of year where things start ramping up with the holidays quickly approaching. For me, work is also picking up. And frankly, things really hurt. My joints feel worse than ever. So what can I do but double down. For the past several weeks I’ve added morning cardio. Nothing crazy, just 15-20 minutes of a light jog or shadow boxing alongside pushups and core work. I’m doing this for two reasons, one to shed some fat around the midsection but more importantly, to help sharpen my mind before work. Cardio has been proven to do just that and if you’ve got TBI like me, it’s more important than ever.
Hoping this inspires you to push through and keep grinding.

My deadlift has been pretty rough for the last several years. But I’ve identified weak points and worked to improve those. Right now my upper back could be stronger yet was finally able to hit a PR of 510lbs. It’s important now and again to push yourself to failure to identify those weak points. Where you fail specifically in the lift should then shape your accessory exercises. And then give it time. It’s taken me well over a year to build up those weak spots and only now is it paying dividends.

Been awhile since my last post. Due to work situations, I’ve had to workout in a public gym (though it’s on base) and I’m a bit older so refuse to be that person recording every lift while people just trying to get work in trip over the tripod. So I work in silence. But decided to take this pic as the last time I made this 455lb lift was probably 4 years ago or longer in knee wraps in competition after a long workup. Today was just a regular day, no competition workup and knee sleeves only. Frankly I’m proud of it. The older you get, and the longer you train, the harder it is to make progress. When you’re new, things move fast. Eventually that slows and you have to start looking at other factors from diet to sleep to training rhythm and more. Just small tweaks, just to get an extra 5lbs in a month or longer. It’s never easy but no matter how hard or how slow the results, you have to keep pushing. So whatever it is you’re stuck in, or struggling with, keep pushing against it. It’ll move eventually.

Fitness doesn’t have to be purely work. In fact, sometimes being fit is what allows you to have fun and live a full life. Signed up for a 5k this past weekend and someone like me isn’t built for running so I just went into it for the fun. I wanted to enjoy the sunshine, a route along the beach, and some time with my wife. We weren’t trying to win. We weren’t trying to beat a certain time. We just wanted to enjoy the crowds and bask in the excitement. It was awesome to set my competitive nature aside for a bit and do something with zero expectations.
Maybe it’s not a 5k for you. But I hope that you’re able to enjoy the benefits from the work you put into the gym. If there’s something you’ve considered doing, just throw yourself out there and do it, no matter the results.

Today marks the 81st Anniversary of Pearl Harbor, an attack on our nation that killed 2,403 service members and invited retaliation from a unified country of millions. Though many more were lost over the course of the war, the response represents something that lives on in all of us. You hurt us, we will hurt you in return, no matter the cost to ourselves. After service, our mission changes were we must live for those who gave all. Honor them by living fully, thanking God every sunrise for another day, another chance, and another opportunity. An opportunity to make your family, your workplace, your community, and your nation a little bit better. A chance to put away any former rage and soak in the beauty of life. Make the loss of those on Pearl Harbor and in every conflict since mean something. Live everyday fully.

Hotel gyms…traveling for work. Some people get completely married to their program and when they find themselves some place where they can’t follow said program, they just stop altogether. Don’t. Do something, keep moving. Even better, try to understand the fundamentals of your program, why certain days look like they do, and try to replicate those fundamentals in another form with the equipment you have. Then you’ll be able to pick up where you left off when you return.

Yesterday a few of us got together to hike up Monserate Mountain which is a little higher than the World Trade Centers 110 floors. And while yesterday mattered and is critical to remember, it is just as critical to remember the day after. On this day, Americans were unified and CAME TOGETHER to mourn those lost and rally against a threat, a threat posed not only on them as an individual but on OUR country. The emphasis placed on the collective of course. Today we seem very polarized, neighbors against neighbors, friends against friends, family against family. Let us all remember on this day that we are all Americans chasing the same dreams of liberty, freedom and the pursuit of happiness. Stop tearing others down and start propping others up. Listen, engage, but most of all, be thankful that you are here today with a new opportunity to make things better not only for you but for others as well. Make the most of it.
