You know, I once worked with a company that doubled its headcount year over year until it went from a small team to thousands of employees. By all the numbers, they were winning — but the people inside told a very different story. Everything felt broken. Nobody knew who to ask about anything, and folks who used to love coming to work were quietly polishing their resumes. After almost twenty years of doing this work here at Core Insights in Tyler, Texas, I can tell you: when you grow too fast, the systems that carried you at one size collapse under the weight of the next. Have you ever felt your company outgrow the way it used to run?

You know, I once worked with a company that doubled their headcount year over year — thousands of employees today. On paper, that's the dream. But when I sat down with their leaders, the word I kept hearing wasn't "exciting," it was "broken." In this week's episode of Core Insights, I answer the question folks type into a search bar late at night: what actually happens when a company grows too fast? Spoiler — the people multiply faster than the leaders can be developed, and everything downstream starts to crack. Have you ever been part of an organization that grew faster than it could handle? I'd love to hear about it. 🎧 Full episode: https://share.transistor.fm/s/16f00e32?v=1786919761117

You know, here's what I love most about developing leaders — it never stays at work. When I teach someone to really listen, to ask the challenging question, to manage conflict instead of avoiding it, that doesn't clock out at 5 o'clock. They take it home. The skills we teach in the workplace, if we take them home, snowball to a much greater life. Better leaders so often become better spouses, better parents, better neighbors. That's the return on developing your people that no spreadsheet captures. So when you invest in leadership, you're investing in a whole person. Where have you seen a work skill make you better at home?

You know, I once watched a company promote their absolute best salesperson into management — and within a year they'd fired him. Everybody just shook their heads and said, "Well, I guess he wasn't a natural-born leader." That phrase is one of the most expensive lies in business. We take someone who was great at their old job, hand them zero leadership development, and act shocked when they struggle. That's not a talent problem. That's a development problem, and the failure isn't theirs — it's ours. In my newest video I unpack how to stop setting good people up to fail. Have you seen this happen where you work?

You know, people meet me now and assume I've always been comfortable in front of a room. Not even close. My very first public-speaking assignment, I got so nervous I walked out of there drenched — like I'd ran a marathon in Houston in August. Public speaking wasn't natural for me. I learned it. And that's exactly the point when it comes to leadership. Nobody is born knowing how to lead people. It's a skill, and skills can be taught, practiced, and developed. So when we expect brand-new leaders to just "have it," we're chasing a myth. What's a skill you had to learn the hard way?

You know, we say it all the time. "Oh, she's a natural-born leader." We say it like leadership is something you either have or you don't, like eye color or being tall. But after nearly twenty years of doing this work, I've come to believe that phrase is a lie — and an expensive one. On this week's episode, I share why, starting with my very first public-speaking assignment, when I was so nervous I was drenched like I'd ran a marathon in Houston in August. Leadership didn't come naturally to me. It was learned. Do you believe leaders are born or made?

You know, here's something that might surprise you — most bad managers aren't bad people. They were great at their job, so the company promoted them, handed them a team, and gave them zero leadership development. Then they struggled, and everyone blamed them. But the real failure? It was a failure to develop them. I've built my whole business at Core Insights around closing that gap, because a great individual contributor and a great leader are two completely different skill sets. We just forget to teach the second one. Have you ever been promoted and left to figure leadership out on your own?

You know, I once watched a brand-new manager clear out an entire team in less than a year. And every single person who walked out the door told me the same thing — it wasn't the pay and it wasn't the workload. It was him. In my new video, I break down three traits I see in bad managers over and over, starting with the big one: they talk way more than they listen. They walk in already knowing the answer, so they never actually hear what their people are trying to tell them. But here's the hopeful part — most bad managers aren't bad people. They were just never developed. Have you ever had a boss who wouldn't listen?

You know what separates a bad manager from a good one? Where the credit goes. A bad manager makes everything about themselves — the win was theirs, the loss was yours. But I believe leadership comes down to one question you should ask yourself every single day: how am I contributing? Am I leaving my people better than I found them? When you lead like that, you're not chasing credit — you're building people up. And funny enough, the leaders who give credit away are the ones people follow the longest. So let me ask you: what did the best leader you ever had do that made you feel valued?
