You've probably walked past an AED dozens of times without giving it a second thought. But during a cardiac emergency, that's a terrible time to start wondering where it is.

AEDs are designed so everyday people can use them. The first step is simply knowing where to find one.

This week, physically locate the AED where you work, train, worship, or spend the most time. Don't just assume there's one. Find it. Remember where it is. Think about how quickly you could get to it.

Because when seconds matter, knowing where to go matters.

There's a difference between believing you're ready and knowing you're ready.

Policies don't prove preparedness. Equipment doesn't prove preparedness. Training certificates don't prove preparedness. Even good intentions don't prove preparedness. Capability does.

Can your people recognize the problem? Do they know what to do? Do your systems actually work? Can your organization perform when circumstances stop cooperating?

Preparedness isn't measured by what an organization owns, what a policy says, or what everyone assumes will happen. It's measured by what works when it matters.

That's why preparedness must be built, tested, challenged, and continually improved.

Because when the moment comes, you don't rise to your intentions. You rely on the capabilities you built beforehand.

Commitment isn't declared. It's demonstrated.

Situational awareness isn't about treating everything like a threat. It's about paying enough attention to recognize when something changes.

When you walk into a restaurant, store, event, or workplace, take a few seconds to notice what's happening around you. Who's there? What's everyone doing? What does normal look like?

Because when something suddenly doesn't fit, you'll be more likely to notice it early—and early awareness gives you options.

Every time you enter a new place this week, take 10 seconds before reaching for your phone.

Look around. Establish what's normal. Then go about your business.

Organizations can buy equipment. They can write policies. They can hold a training class. They can conduct an assessment.

None of those things, by themselves, create preparedness.

Preparedness comes from what happens afterward.

Do we inspect it again?
Do we train again?
Do we correct the weakness?
Do we verify the correction worked?
Do leaders continue asking hard questions when nobody is watching?

Anyone can make preparedness a priority after something happens. Discipline is making it a priority before it does.

Every organization eventually faces a moment when preparation matters. The mistake is believing that moment is when the emergency begins.

It isn't.

The real moment is now, when there is still time to assess the risk, address the weakness, train the people, and build the capability.
