THE FIRST WARNING IS USUALLY SMALL.
Major problems rarely begin as major problems.
They begin with something that seems insignificant.
A door that should be secured—but isn't.
Someone entering an area where they don't normally belong.
A change in an employee's behavior.
A procedure that keeps getting bypassed.
A security concern everyone has simply gotten used to.
Nothing dramatic.
Nothing that immediately screams emergency.
And that's exactly why these moments are so easy to miss.
Over time, people become accustomed to their environment. The unusual becomes familiar. The workaround becomes normal. The vulnerability becomes part of the routine.
Until something happens that makes everyone look backward and ask: “Did anyone notice this before?”
Often, someone did.
The challenge is creating an organization where people are prepared to recognize, question, and report what doesn't look right.
Situational awareness isn't about treating everything as a threat.
It's about knowing what normal looks like well enough to recognize when something changes.
Look beyond the obvious.
Notice the small things.
Ask the question.
Report the concern.
Because sometimes the opportunity to prevent a serious incident begins with something almost everyone else walked past.
