Something I wish I never would have had to write, or at least not anytime soon...
Kirk Vince Zimmer Jr. passed away at 3:38 p.m. Thursday, August 6th, at Sacred Heart Medical Center after a hard-fought battle with Stage 4 melanoma that had spread to his brain.
Vince was diagnosed just two days before Thanksgiving after suffering a seizure. An MRI revealed one large tumor and six additional tumors on his brain. Over the following nine months, he underwent brain surgery, three Gamma Knife treatments, immunotherapy, and countless other treatments and procedures.
Despite everything he went through, Vince continued to fight until his body simply couldn't anymore. His condition declined rapidly over the final weeks, and on August 6th, our family made the difficult decision to transition him into hospice care and focus on keeping him comfortable.
Just two hours after moving into hospice, Vince peacefully passed away surrounded by his family.
Vince was an only child who lost both of his parents at a young age, yet went on to live an absolutely incredible life, outlasting both of his parents by over 20 years..
He was an athlete, entrepreneur, adventurer, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor. He loved to laugh and crack jokes, and he loved anything with wheels, boards, or an engine. He loved skiing, windsurfing, water skiing, motocross, boating, golf, and spending time on the water and in the mountains.
Vince built a name for himself in the boating and skiing industry and touched countless lives along the way. He was one of the hardest-working people you could meet, but he also knew how to enjoy life and make time for his family, friends, and the things he loved.
Everyone who knew Vince knew how much he loved people. He had a way of making everyone around him feel welcome, and the incredible number of people who reached out and came to see him during his final days was a testament to the impact he had on so many lives.
We were hoping for years more with him. Instead, we had nine months.
Melanoma took him far too soon.
