“Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, and eight hours for what we will” — a powerful slogan from the first Labor Day demonstration in 1882. Thanks to the efforts of the Knights of Labor and dedicated workers across the nation, Colorado was the first to make it an official holiday in 1887. Within the same year, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts followed suit, which eventually led to the establishment of Labor Day as a recognized federal holiday for all United States in 1894.
