I really did not want to post this video. 😅

I’m super stoked that my account has been growing steadily lately, but I can’t shake the feeling that I could be offering more value to my audience.

I think a big reason is that a lot of my content has felt so curated— quick one-minute videos with actionable tips for success. But I want to show the real side of my business and life too, including the challenges and struggles I face, so you don’t feel so alone in yours.

So this is my first attempt to really put myself out there. One take, no edits, imperfect delivery, but 100% me.

Turning down paying clients is part of the job.

Not every inquiry is a good fit. The sooner you internalize that, the easier this business gets.

If making money makes you feel like a bad person, there’s a name for that: money block. And it’s way more common than you think.

Here’s the thing I had to work through, and I read this in a Seth Godin book. If you sold someone a five dollar bill for one dollar, you wouldn’t feel like you ripped them off. They’d be walking away knowing they got an incredible deal.

That’s exactly how your work should feel to the right client. You’re not extracting from them. You’re handing them something worth far more than they paid.

Selling should NOT be adversarial. I don’t believe in squeezing every dollar out of someone. But swinging all the way to other side of the pendulum is self-sabotage. There is a middle ground that exists. That’s where you should be aiming.

So stop saying no for your clients. Let them decide what you’re worth to them.

I charge $490 for headshots. People pay $750.

My sessions includes two images. But I invite clients to bring three or four looks. Professional, smart casual, something fun.

By the time we’re reviewing together, they’ve seen all the shots and want more than two.

Each additional image is $240, and they receive a bonus headshot for every two they purchase.

And credit where it’s due: I learned this pricing approach from Megan DiPiero, who’s been teaching it for a while. It’s doing wonders for my business.

If you want more of how I run the business side of things, I send this kind of stuff to my email list. Link in bio.

A great photoshoot is transformative in ways that go way beyond the photos. That’s something AI will never touch.

In a world where artificiality becomes the norm, I truly believe the human experience will be valued more than ever.

Skills matter a little.
Confidence matters a lot.

I don’t think enough creatives realize how costly it is to run a business. This shouldn’t even be a hot take: you should be profitable. Not “getting by”, not breaking even, PROFITABLE. Let’s stop playing small and step into the business owners we’re meant to be.

Remember my previous post where I talked about how I love to capture business looks and "fun" looks in the same session? Shelly is a shining example of that!

She came to me looking for a refreshed headshot but we gave her so much more. And after killing it in her business looks, of course we had to capture some shots just for her.

We had such a fun day in the studio together. Which image stands out to you the most?

Personal branding portraits have quickly become my favorite kind of session to shoot.
Maybe it’s because so many of my branding clients are invested in how they want to portray themselves. They care about the details. That makes the session so much more enjoyable for me because then we’re creating art together.
Here are a few of my favorite branding shots I’ve taken, some old, some new. If you’re a business owner looking for personal branding portraits or know someone who is, let’s get in touch. 🙂
