Most companies prepare for CMMC Level 2 by focusing on the 110 controls in NIST 800-171.

That's the right starting point, but the actual benchmark is the CMMC Assessment Guide, which expands those 110 controls into roughly 320 specific assessment objectives. Each one is a discrete pass-or-fail check.
