Cleaning isn’t always enough.

Removal isn’t always necessary.

The better question is:

What do the conditions support?

A surface can look better.

But is that enough?

Appearance is useful information — but appearance alone doesn’t demonstrate that the remediation objective was achieved.

That’s why the question eventually becomes:

How will you verify the outcome?

Your crew says the job is done.

What evidence would make you disagree?

Imagine walking through a completed remediation project.

The affected materials have been addressed.

The surfaces look clean.

Your team followed the established process.

Everything suggests the job is finished.

But then verification reveals something unexpected.

Would you question the results?

Revisit the work?

Or take another look at the original assessment?

Experienced remediation professionals understand that confidence isn’t about always being right.

It’s about being willing to reconsider a decision when the evidence calls for it.

A successful process should be able to stand up to verification, not just visual inspection.

HOW DO YOU KNOW? Because the evidence supports the outcome.

Mold is present.

Does that automatically mean the material has to come out?

Sometimes removal is absolutely appropriate.

But the material, condition, moisture history, accessibility and ability to verify the outcome all matter.

The condition should drive the decision.

The wall is dry today.

But what happened while it was wet?

Imagine arriving at a project where the leak has been repaired and moisture readings are back to normal.

Does that mean the affected materials are ready to stay?

Not necessarily.

A dry reading tells you something about current conditions.

It doesn’t tell you everything about what happened before you arrived.

How long was the material wet?

What evidence of damage or microbial growth remains?

What is the condition of the material?

Does the evidence support cleaning, removal, or further investigation?

Experienced remediation professionals understand that today’s conditions are only part of the story.

The best decision comes from understanding what happened, what remains, and what the evidence supports.

Experience teaches you to look beyond the reading.

The moisture problem is fixed.

Now what?

Stopping the source is critical.

But it doesn’t automatically tell you what should happen next.

Imagine the leak has been repaired, the area is dry, and affected materials remain.

Do you clean?

Do you remove?

Do you treat?

Do you test?

The answer depends on what you find now, not simply what caused the problem in the first place.

Look at the material.

Look at the extent and condition.

Consider the evidence.

Then decide what the project actually requires.

Fixing the source stops the cause. Understanding what remains determines the next move.

Mold on a material. Does it automatically have to come out?

Sometimes, absolutely.

But not every material — or every condition — is the same.

The better question is:

How do you know when cleaning is enough — and when it isn’t?

That’s the subject of Episode 12 of HOW DO YOU KNOW?

You found mold on the material.

Does that automatically mean it has to come out?

This is where the decision matters.

Finding mold tells you there is a condition that needs to be addressed.

It doesn’t automatically tell you what the correct scope should be.

Before making the cut, ask:

What material are we dealing with?

What is its condition?

What does the assessment tell us?

Can it be successfully restored?

What evidence would support keeping it or removing it?

Sometimes removal is absolutely the right decision.

Sometimes it isn’t.

The goal isn’t less demolition or more demolition. It’s knowing why you’re making the decision.

A good remediation plan gives the project direction.

But when the evidence changes, the decision may need to change with it.

The goal isn’t to defend the first plan.

It’s to make the best decision with the information you have now.

You assessed the project correctly based on the information available.

Then you opened the wall—and learned something new.

That doesn’t automatically mean the original assessment failed.

Sometimes it simply means:

the project gave you more information.

Good remediation means continuing to pay attention.
