As adults, we’re always looking ahead. The next job. The next promotion. The next opportunity. We spend so much time wondering what comes next that we rarely stop to consider what we’re already doing.

But children do.

Ask a child what their mom or dad does, and you won’t hear a job title or salary range. You’ll hear things like:

“My mom helps people feel better.”

“My dad fixes things that are broken.”

“My mom teaches kids.”

“My dad keeps everyone safe.”

Children don’t see our work through the lens of status, paychecks, or career ladders. They see purpose. They see impact. They see the difference we make in the lives of others.

Sometimes, before we start dreaming about the next thing, it might do us good to look at what we do through the eyes of a child. We may discover that the work we’ve grown accustomed to is meaningful in ways we’ve forgotten.

The next job might be great. But don’t overlook the value of the one you’re doing today.
