Fall food plots a.k.a. cover crops are coming in nicely!

These photos were taken before the rain came through late last week. Not too shabby for 3-4 weeks of hot and dry weather! That’s the wonderful benefit of having residue from past crops protecting the soil surface.

I’m hoping the rain will make those young plants jump and put on solid biomass before frost hits later this month.

Attracting wildlife, cycling soil nutrients, and feeding soil microbes!

I love the mat of vegetation created when you roll standing cover crops. W**d suppression and moisture retention at its finest!

Very cool article detailing some common causes of antler deformities. As mentioned in the article, most unusual antlers are the result of an injury!

Just as premier wines come from the grapes of stressed vines, cool antlers with great character often come from bucks who suffered broken bones, harsh diseases, or crippling injuries. As Demi Lovato sings, “Nothing is more beautiful than the smile that struggled through tears.” Admirable antler....

Diverse Warm-Season Food Plot/Cover Crop | Photo 1&2 showing the biomass and root depth from a sunn h**p plant. Photo 3&4 showing the biomass (browsed by deer) and root depth from a mung bean.

This is a first-year plot with zero fertilizer applied.

So many benefits from this mix of plants including: soil nutrient cycling, atmospheric nitrogen fixation, w**d suppression, moisture retention, adding carbon to the soil, deer forage, pollinator habitat, bugging areas for turkey poults and game bird chicks, and on and on!

Some species in the mix: sunn h**p, mung bean, guar, grain sorghum (milo), sorghum-sudangrass, proso millet, pearl millet, sunflower, buckwheat, white and yellow sweetclover.

This deep woods harvest plot was planted with a multi-species mix last fall and then had perennial clovers broadcast into it in early spring.

You can see the old residue underneath the clover! That residue is preserving moisture, keeping w**ds under control, and decomposing to provide nutrients for the clover.

We then spread a diverse mix of warm-season species into the plot in early summer to continue cycling nutrients and fill in areas where the clover was less abundant. Latter pictures show some of the summer plant species.

The plan is to once again broadcast a cool-season mix of annuals into the standing clover in the fall.

New harvest plot creation in the deep woods!

The thunder is rolling in the background so I am scrambling to get a cover crop seeded on the exposed soil. I am planting a very simple, quick-growing mix of buckwheat, browntop millet, and crimson clover.

Kansas farmer Clint Bauer started Greenfield Robotics to control w**ds on his farm.

Here’s a real-time look at the progress of our minimal equipment, no-till food plot system.

Summer weather can be hard on food plots but all the mulch from past crops is keeping our soil cool and moist. As the summer months wear on, we expect to see a high amount of biomass in these plots that will suppress w**ds, attract critters, and improve soil health.

No tractor, no drill or planter, no fertilizer, no insecticide, no fungicide.

Minimal equipment, no-till, high-diversity seed blend, and a little bit of rain. Almost looks like a no-till drill planted this plot!

Some close-ups of a few species in our summer blends:
- sunflower
- buckwheat
- sunn h**p
- grain sorghum
- mung bean
