This summer has been a struggle for getting good hay put up. God gave us a nice window to get some beautiful, second cutting grass small squared and in the barn. Doesn’t get much better!

Lots of hay was cut in Nebraska the last few days! Timothy, alfalfa, alfalfa/orchard, and brome. Let’s pray the weatherman is right!

We all know that rainy day crash. Bonzo has been busy in the fields with lots of tractor time and walking the fields to pull weeds prior to cutting. We are hoping for a few shorter days ahead of us, then back to hay!

We got our first few fields of brome grass tucked away ahead of a beautiful shower. God even showed off and threw a rainbow in above our hay barn. The high temperatures and wind are not fun to be in, but they sure make good hay.

Here at Roaming Pastures, we take our quality control very seriously. Rain or shine, hot or cold, these guys are working hard sampling products to ensure their fellow forage-loving friends will get the best quality product. With over 150 years of combined experience, these guys are still living rent-free in our pasture. We might as well put them to work!

Teff is coming up nicely! We were a bit concerned that with a hard 3” rain, followed by 100 F temperatures, the seedlings would not survive due to being washed in too deep and fighting a top crust. Teff seed is .03” in diameter, making seed placement super critical for germination. It is good to see the small seedlings pushing through to break the crust and reach sunlight! This annual summer grass will be ready for harvest in 6-8 weeks.

It has been a busy, productive week for our growing hay business. 80 acres of alfalfa/oat hay put up and 100 acres of Teff planted. God is good!
