Hello all, even though I don't work on personal income taxes, I thought I would pass on some useful tips.
• File Electronically & Use Direct Deposit. This is the fastest and most secure way to receive a refund.
• Check eligibility for credits/deductions, example child tax credits, education expenses, home mortgage interest, charitable contributions.
• Choose a reputable prepare and ensure they have a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number). I recommend an enrolled agent over a tax preparer. Enrolled agents offer higher expertise and representation, while tax preparers are sufficient for basic filing.
• Review last years return and use it as a guide to ensure you don’t miss recurring deductions.
• Report ALL income. Unemployment, gambling winning, freelance work, etcetera. This will help you avoid penalties. Trust me, the IRS knows and will get their money, even if you fail to report it. Save yourself the headaches.
• Above all, if you need an extension, ask for it ahead of time, don’t wait until the last minute.
This is not an exclusive list, but rather some tips I want to pass on as you prepare your personal income taxes.
