Before Q4, ask yourself three questions:

1. Profitability: Do you know which areas of the business are actually driving profit—and which may be underperforming?

2. Cash Flow: Do you have a clear picture of what’s coming in, what’s going out, and what the next few months could look like?

3. Planning: Are your Q4 decisions based on current financial information, or are you still relying primarily on what happened in the past?

As we head toward the final quarter of the year, these are the types of questions we encourage business owners to be asking. And sometimes, answering them requires financial insight that goes beyond traditional accounting or bookkeeping.

Our latest article looks at the space between day-to-day accounting and high-level CFO strategy—and how bridging that gap can give business owners the financial visibility they need to plan ahead.

Clarity creates better leaders.

We work with business owners who are making decisions every day about hiring, pricing, spending, growth, and what to prioritize next. Those decisions are a lot harder when the financial picture isn’t clear.

For example, a business may be bringing in more revenue than last year and considering adding another employee. But when we look more closely at cash flow, margins, and upcoming expenses, the numbers may show that hiring now would put unnecessary pressure on the business, or, just as importantly, confirm that the business is in a strong position to make that investment.

That’s why we want financial reporting to be useful, not just accurate. The goal is to understand what the numbers mean for the decisions you’re making today and what you’re planning for next.

I often imagine what my dogs are thinking in certain moments. I don't always understand the look on their face or the way they communicate with body posture, but I try.

Today, instead of my usual guessing game, I just marveled at Isa's abilities.

🐶 The care she took in finding the exact number of slats for the blinds.
🐈‍⬛ The perfect angle to watch for squirrels and the dreaded neighborhood cats.
🐦 The ingenious way she's figured out how to never lift her head, only pivot it, to track a bird flying off.

How can you not be impressed by that kind of natural talent?

All kidding aside, my dogs really are brilliant. Their humans (my husband and I) keep their brains busy solving puzzle toys, long runs, letting them do their pointer thing when they can. Isa just added "blind surveillance" to the list.

Fall tax deadlines are coming.

September and October bring several important deadlines for both businesses and individuals:

• September 15: Partnership and S Corporation extended tax returns are due, along with third-quarter estimated tax payments for individuals.

• October 15: Extended individual income tax returns and C Corporation returns for calendar-year filers are due.

Now is a good time to make sure your records are organized, your books are current, and any outstanding financial information is addressed.

A little preparation now can prevent a lot of scrambling later and give you greater clarity heading into year-end.

Recently, Carrie had the opportunity to join Accounting Today as a panelist for “Outsourcing as Strategy: Scaling Capacity in a Talent-Constrained Market.”

The conversation explored how firms are using outsourced talent not simply to fill gaps, but to build stronger, more flexible businesses.

One of our biggest takeaways? Outsourcing isn’t just about capacity. It’s about strategy.

When structured intentionally, outsourcing can help businesses access specialized expertise, improve efficiency, protect internal resources, and create the flexibility needed to grow—without adding unnecessary overhead.

For us, the goal is always the same: build the right financial support around the business so leaders can focus on where they’re going next.

Something I posted on my personal page too....

Hi, my name is Carrie, and I'm a recovering perfectionist with control issues-an occupational hazard.

I've spent years learning to let go of perfection, but life keeps reminding me it doesn't run on my terms.

This week had some unexpected changes that I'd been praying over and didn't expect so soon.

Thank you, God, for providing in ways I couldn't have planned for. I'm blessed beyond measure, and truth be told, I already was.

So we celebrated at one of our favorite places. Small table, good drinks, nothing fancy. But it was with the person who stands with me through the good and the not so good.

Thank you, Chad, for celebrating with me, and for not letting my perfectionism drive you nuts.

Financial clarity isn't the finish line. It's the foundation for building a stronger business.

When accounting is reliable, processes have clear ownership, and leadership understands what the numbers are saying, decisions become more proactive, and growth becomes more sustainable.

Pricing, hiring, cash flow, investments, and long-term planning all become easier when they're backed by accurate financial information.

Our team helps growing businesses strengthen the finance function behind those decisions. We combine accounting ex*****on, Controller oversight, fractional CFO guidance, and practical process improvement based on what each organization needs.

We believe business owners shouldn't have to choose between dependable day-to-day financial operations and strategic financial insight. Strong businesses require both.

That's how we help turn financial chaos into confidence.

A bank balance tells you how much cash is available today. It doesn't tell you the full financial health of your business.

That cash may already be committed to payroll, taxes, vendors, debt, equipment, or projects that must be completed before the next customer payment arrives. At the same time, a profitable business can still experience cash flow pressure when receivables are slow, inventory grows, or projects require significant upfront investment.

Understanding the difference between cash and profit, available cash and committed cash, or strong sales and strong collections requires more than checking your bank account. It takes a clear view of your financial statements, receivables, payables, upcoming obligations, project timing, and short-term cash flow.

At Breakaway Business Advisors, our team helps business owners understand not only what's in the bank today, but what cash is likely to do next, so they can make more confident decisions.

Financial statements are not only a record of what already happened. Used well, they help leadership decide what should happen next.

The story may appear in several places:

• margins are narrowing even while sales increase
• receivables are growing faster than cash
• one service line is supporting another
• labor costs are rising without a corresponding pricing change
• overhead has increased ahead of capacity
• backlog is strong, but working capital is tight

Each trend creates a leadership question.

Do we need to adjust pricing?
Can we afford another hire?
Should we delay an equipment purchase?
Which work should we pursue more—or less—of?
What needs attention before the next growth decision?

Our team helps turn reliable financial reporting into practical leadership intelligence. The goal is not simply to read the numbers. It is to understand what they mean for the business and act earlier.

The best time to strengthen a financial process is before growth exposes the gaps.

As a business grows, informal processes become harder to manage. Billing gets delayed, approvals get buried, payroll becomes more complicated, and month-end reporting relies too heavily on one person's knowledge.

Strong businesses build consistent, repeatable processes that support accurate reporting, clear accountability, and better decision-making.

At Breakaway Business Advisors, our team looks beyond the financial reports to improve the systems and workflows that create them. Because growth isn't the problem. The question is whether your financial processes are ready to support it.
