This afternoon’s storms created quite a mess. There were 11 service calls for the Holland Fire Department. These calls were downed trees in the road, downed power lines, and even trees on a few houses.

At this time, all calls have been cleared. Entergy is working on power outages. And the road department will continue to clear up the roads.

We are happy to report 12 of Holland’s Volunteer Firefighters were able to respond to calls throughout our community. Thank you all for your service. We also want to give a shout out to Erik Oliver with Oliver’s Custom Roofing. He lives in the community and helped the department and a fellow neighbor cover part of the roof from damage.

Today Holland Fire Department was dispatched for mutual aid along with four other fire departments for a brush fire. Yesterday, they were burning, and today it relit on its own. Thankfully, there were no structures around. Together, we worked to control the fire and put it out.

It’s dry outside which makes it easy for fires to start and spread quickly.

A small spark from lightening, heat, vehicle, machinery, cigarette butts, fireworks, campfires or burning brush can be fueled by oxygen. Adding to the fuel, dry grass, brush and trees, it’s a sure thing there will be a spark. Certain weather conditions like, strong wind, drought, high temperatures and low humidity can make fires bigger, faster, and more dangerous.

Although, accidents do happen, there are some ways you can take precautions during this dry season. Clear dry leaves and debris, avoid burning in hot windy weather, follow fire advisories, and dispose of ci******es properly. You can also create a fire break by creating a space around your home, trim vegetation, and keep flammables away.

Did you know when there is a fire in your home, there is a possibility of chemicals that can harm you that you cannot see?

This week Disaster Restoration Management (Customer Advocate) came to the station and spoke with us on what they do to determine if those chemicals are present and what they do to clean them.

These ladies from Globe Life Liberty National Division also took the time to give each of us quotes for life insurance policies and Insurance policies.

When it comes to your loved ones, you can never be too careful on what you do to protect them and make sure they are taken care of.

We appreciate the time each of them took and the food they brought to feed our hungry department.

✅ Drink plenty of fluids.

✅ Keep an eye on yourself and others.

✅ If you have to work outside, get in the shade frequently.

This morning Holland Fire Department responded to a mutual aid. The call came in early.

One of the most important decisions an incident commander can make is recognizing when additional resources will be needed and requesting mutual aid early. One of the great things about our fire department and surrounding departments, they work great together knowing the common goal, to keep everyone safe and put out fires.

Minutes are valuable. And all the departments are important. A fire takes work to get smaller.

Whether it’s a structure fire, grass fire, vehicle extrication, or large-scale emergency, incidents can escalate quickly. Calling for mutual aid early doesn’t mean your department can’t handle the situation—it means you’re planning ahead and putting the safety of your firefighters and your community first.

Early mutual aid provides additional personnel for fire attack, search and rescue, water supply, rehabilitation, traffic control, and relief crews. It also ensures that resources remain available to protect the rest of your district if another emergency occurs while your department is committed to a major incident.

Strong mutual aid relationships are built on teamwork, trust, and the understanding that no department can do it all alone. Every department, regardless of its size, will eventually need help. Likewise, every department should be ready to answer the call when their neighbors need assistance.

Remember: you can always cancel responding units if they are no longer needed, but you can never get back the time lost by waiting too long to ask for help. When lives, property, and firefighter safety are on the line, requesting mutual aid early is not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of good leadership and sound incident

This young man is (Rey) “pronounced Ray”. Rey had a big Birthday wish! 🥳 He wanted to celebrate his birthday with firefighters. 🚒

The Holland Fire Department was excited to host a day for Rey! 🤗They had a fun filled day. Rey toured the station, rode apparatus,🚒 and seen and heard lights and sirens. 🚨 He learned about equipment, fire 🔥 safety, and office work of a fire department.

And to add to the excitement! 🤗They finished the day by training on some “nozzle work” (the hose line)! Rey caught his first plug! (getting water out of a hydrant and filling the fire truck) 💯

The day was full of fun, learning, and memorable moments. Lots of hours of planning and hard work was involved… but upon completion Mr. Rey became an official Honorary Junior Firefighter 👨🏼‍🚒 with the Holland Fire Department!

He was awarded a certificate showing his dedication to learning fire service activities and was presented with a few personal gifts. 🎁

It was super 🥵 hot but spending the day sharing the love of the Fire Service with the next generation… doesn’t get any cooler! 😎
