Ironwood Policy & Risk

Ironwood Policy & Risk Independent policy, regulatory, and project risk analysis across local, state, and federal environments. Based in Virginia.

Serving clients nationwide through remote advisory, with field operations concentrated in Southwestern Virginia.

This is the first project under Ironwood Policy & Risk.

We put together a structured review of the Staunton River zone restructuring process here in Bedford County.

The focus wasn’t on taking a position, it was on whether the decision was supported by a clear, complete plan.

That means looking at:
• Staffing
• Capacity
• Transportation
• Day-to-day ex*****on

Where those pieces were defined, and where they weren’t.

The outcome: The proposed school closure was delayed, and the board is now moving toward an independent, county-wide study.

Appreciate all the parents and community members who showed up, spoke, and stayed engaged throughout the process. That kind of participation matters.

We’ve officially transitioned to Ironwood Policy & Risk.

This change reflects a clearer direction in the work we’re doing.

Ironwood focuses on independent analysis across policy, regulatory, and project risk environments throughout Southwestern Virginia and the Blue Ridge region. Our work sits at the intersection of zoning, public policy, stakeholder dynamics, and real-world project ex*****on.

We provide objective feasibility analysis before decisions are made, and independent oversight as projects move forward, ensuring clients maintain clear visibility into evolving conditions and potential vulnerabilities.

The name has changed. The principle has not.

Identify risk early. Strengthen ex*****on.

A company created in the Blue Ridge, for the people who call these mountains home.
The Founders Line just went live: hoodies, shirts, and hats cut simple and strong.

The photo behind me is Huntingdon, a brick house from 1819 our community is trying to save.

10% of every profit goes toward projects like this: youth, land, culture, and roots.

Most people in Roanoke don’t even know this house exists, or how close we came to losing it.
Huntingdon has been standing since 1819, long before the city we know today.

We just published the full story of what’s happening, why it matters, and how the community is pulling together.

Read the full write-up here:

Huntingdon is one of Roanoke’s oldest surviving homes, built in 1819, older than the city itself. The city once eyed it for demolition, but a budget pause sparked a community rally. Neighbors, historians, and local groups are now working to save it. Dogwood & Deathcap isn’t leading the effort, b...

Every child in Bedford County deserves fair access to safe fields, strong schools, and equal opportunity.

This month, we spoke with Bedford County Parks & Rec Director Stuart Saunders, who confirmed that no system currently tracks field maintenance or youth spending by district.

To help change that, we’ve drafted a resolution calling for annual public reporting from both Parks & Rec and Bedford County Public Schools.

We’ve submitted it to our District 1 Supervisor for sponsorship with the goal of bringing it before the Board of Supervisors.

Transparency builds trust — and trust builds stronger communities.

The latest update from the Bedford County Transparency Project is live.

We’ve received data from Bedford County Public Schools, a $450 cost estimate from Parks & Recreation, and we’re now asking an important question:

If the County already tracks this data, why would it take that much time and money to find it?

If the data exists, we’ll share it.
If it doesn’t, we’ll work to ensure it’s tracked and reported in the future.

We’re digging into Bedford County data. If the numbers exist, we’ll share them, if not, we’ll make sure they’re tracked and public.

After a post went “Bedford County viral” about field conditions and last-minute cancellations, and seeing recent tension between the School Board and Board of Supervisors over local funding, we decided to take the next step.

Dogwood & Deathcap, submitted Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with Bedford County Public Schools, County Government, and Parks & Recreation to get a clearer picture of how local funds are actually distributed, per student, per player, and per field.

At this moment, this isn’t about calling anyone out, it’s about understanding, fairness, and making sure every part of the county gets the same care and opportunity.
