Advance Care Planning involves a deep questioning of someone's past, current and future life. It's not just a piece of paper to fill out quickly in the emergency room. It should be given conscious thought.

What are your beliefs?
What are your values?
Do you have a past traumatic medical history?
How is your medical condition now and overall health?
Who is your support systems (hopefully more than 1)?
What kind of access do you have to care including finances?

You should know the deeper questions you need to ask yourself, and understand the depth of them. You should give yourself TIME to process what you really would want. Once the emergency happens, often it's just too late for decisions to be made with great thought. Maybe you want to discuss these questions with loved ones or a spiritual advisor.

Don't wait.

It's always disappointing when newspaper articles do not provide a realistic look while promoting a system, and focusing on private pay hospice inpatient options here in Virginia Beach, while leaving out alternative resources. I do think this was a brave article to put on the front page of the Pilot and encourages conversations about death and dying. I'm glad they are promoting hospice and highlighting some of the benefits. It would have been so nice to include doulas in the options here while mentioning the limitations of hospice and how planning ahead is important.

I mean the physical paper these days isn't a sustainable resource and I would venture to guess that the people still receiving it to their doors are over 65, so it is the optimal demographic.
