Originally created to keep flies out of horse barns, automated misting systems have since been adapted to protect the outdoor spaces where people spend their time too.
The first automatic misting system was patented in 1972 as a way to control flies around horses without someone having to constantly spray the barn by hand. The idea was pretty simple: place a series of nozzles throughout the area and automatically release a fine mist at scheduled intervals.
More than 50 years later, the basic concept is still surprisingly similar.
For residential mosquito control, nozzles are strategically placed around the property, particularly near landscaping and other areas where mosquitoes tend to rest. Rather than treating the entire yard as one big open space, the system is designed around mosquito behavior and the areas they’re most likely to use.
And because mosquitoes can continually move into a property from surrounding areas, the system can be programmed to treat on a consistent schedule instead of depending on a single application to last indefinitely.
A system designed for horse barns in the 1970s turned out to work pretty well for backyards, too.
