Geared towards Softball Student-Athletes

Been having some conversations with younger players (12U, 14U) and have noticed an interesting trend (and it's not a good one).
Many (almost all) of the players mentioned they only play softball. Apparently they claim they have no time for any other sports.
If this is you….. You need to reevaluate your choices.

College coaches and former players constantly talk about the importance of playing other sports (you can easily look this up).
Focusing only on one sport at such a young age is not a recipe for success. Contrary to what you might think. Volleyball, basketball, soccer, water polo, field hockey, track… these are all great options for young softball players.

Many of today’s most elite athletes played other sports, especially in High School.

If your travel ball coach is telling you it’s not important or valuable, you might need a new travel ball coach.

Had an interesting conversation recently with a parent about their daughter’s Official Visit. As you all know, this is one of the greatest highlights for a HS student-athlete. Working all these years to get recruited and then the day is finally here to go on your official visit. Is there anything more exciting for a HS student-athlete?
So a parent tells me that the daughter’s travel ball coach asked her if she could possibly skip her official visit or have it rescheduled. WHAT????

Apparently, the weekend of her visit was also a big tournament (won’t say which one). But holy moly. What kind of travel ball coach would even ask this of a player??

The official visit is one of the greatest highlights and joys of being a student-athlete. It’s the culmination of years of incredibly hard work and the Official Visit is the reward you get for being chosen to continue your athletic career in college.

As a coach, you should be as proud as you can be for your players if they accomplish this goal. Conversely, I cannot imagine a coach being so selfish that he asks a player to skip their visit.

Bottom Line:
If this is something your coach would do or does, you might need to consider a new coach.
If you are this coach, you need to evaluate your priorities.

Got a text from a parent & player today who were on a visit. They said the Head Coach told them that every email she sent them was flagged and they read every single one of them.
As we’ve said before, you just never know what will be the catalyst to a coach noticing you as a player. But if you never send emails, there’s zero chance to be acknowledged or build name recognition.

We are always preaching about the importance of being consistent throughout the year with emails, social media posts and videos. But most players just make the decision to do nothing when they are not playing. This is most prevalent over the holidays and during HS season.

The bottom line is you will never know what email you send, what social media post or video you captured will be the difference in getting a coach’s attention. And once you have their attention, your chances of getting committed just went way up.

But on the other hand, if you take 6 months off from December to May, you are literally giving away 50% of the year and 50% of your chance to get noticed.

Learn what you need to do when you’re building your school list, sending emails or posting on social media. Sign up for our Recruiting Webinar series that starts next month. Invest $99 in yourself to give yourself the best chance for success. If you sign up by Jan31, you can save $20 if you sign up and pay by 1/31. DM for the code to save $20 immediately. Aren’t you worth a $79 investment? Is a scholarship worth $100K + worth $79?

When we talk about the Last Ten Percent, it’s the work that student-athletes have to put in in order to have the best chance of success in their recruiting journey.
Well, you should ask yourself, “Am I putting in the work”?

The average cost of one year of college is $56,422. If you talk to current college students, parents or other student-athletes in college, you will find it’s likely even more than that. That’s over $225K or 4 years. And every one of the young ladies playing softball, trying to continue their career in college, are hoping to earn a scholarship to help offset some of that cost. Yet when we talk to student-athletes and ask them what they are doing (besides just playing softball), many say “not much”.

So if you are thinking a college coach is going to just offer you a place on the team which could be worth $100K, $200K or more over the next 4 years......what do you think you should be doing to earn that offer besides just playing? We always talk about showcasing yourself in 3 ways: Student, Athlete, Person. The work you need to put into your recruiting journey tells coaches exactly what kind of person you are.

If you want to earn a scholarship to continue to play in college, invest $99 in yourself and learn what you need to do to give yourself the best chance to do just that.

Only 7.6% of girls playing in high school go on to play in college. Do you want to be part of the 7.6% or the other 92.4% that don’t?

Click the link in our bio to sign up for our spring workshop. You will never get more value from a $99 investment than you will from our workshop.

If you are just posting your content on Instagram or X and just walking away, don’t expect to get much value from your posts. More importantly, don’t expect that the people you are hoping to see your posts (college coaches) will ever see anything you put out there.
If you don’t embrace the “social” aspect of social media, you are simply posting for your own benefit and no one else’s. There is almost no chance your target audience will see your post. And the reason is simple, the algorithms that run social media will not prioritize your posts if you don’t interact and engage with others.
So if you want to make the most of social media (FREE ADVERTISING) you need to embrace the social aspect of it and start engaging with other posts, add comments, re-post them, add them to your story etc. When that happens, you will start to see more engagement with your own posts. And who knows, maybe that head coach at your #1 school will see your post and start keeping an eye on your account.....

Who is advocating for you?
Do you know? Is it your coach? (Sure hope they are advocating for you!) Be sure you understand who is helping you in your recruiting journey by knowing who is advocating for you. Travel Ball coaches should be advocating for their players and that means talking to coaches on your behalf, calling coaches ahead of camps and visits and just being someone who has your best interest at heart. They are your “rep” so to speak. If you’re not sure if your coach is doing this for you, you need to ask them about it and make sure you both understand what each others role is. This month, even though we’re barely into the new year, we have been super busy on the phone reaching out to coaches for all the players we work with to make sure they have the best chance for success when these players get to a college camp. Just over the past week or so, we’ve had some great conversations with coaches, and players have been able to get really useful feedback. This only helps players on their journey as well as learning what coaches are looking for. So if you are not sure who is advocating for you, then it’s worth a few minutes of your time to have that conversation with your coach. Have questions? Not sure what to say? Send us a DM for a free guide.
