‘BUT IT WAS A GIFT!’

’Tis the season … the post-season, for that influx of Gifts.

Gifts are one of the trickiest stumbling blocks to the home editing process.

, author of (highly recommend!) says this about gifts:
‘The good news is you can receive the thoughtful and loving intention of the gift, and then opt to donate or pass on the gift itself. Say thank you, be gracious (and grateful), and then find that gift a new home. You get to decide if you’re more comfortable returning, exchanging, regifting, or donating the item in question. Just promise you won’t shove them in the back of your closet “in case the gift giver ever asks about them.” It’’s okay to let go of the gifts – and the side of guilt.’

As a gift giver, would you want someone to hold on to something out of guilt or obligation?

Relationships are so much more than things. You’re not ‘getting rid’ of the person if you don’t keep ‘the thing’.

Grant yourself permission to love the thought and the giver, but keep only the things that serve you best. 🕊️🎁🕊️

After the busy holiday season, we’ve likely had an influx of new items in our homes, which makes this the perfect time to try a ‘Purchase Pause’ —
For the month of January, commit to putting any wants on the back burner for 30 days.

Benefits include:
💚 Fewer items to manage /
💚 Increased space
💚 Interruption of habits
💚 Saving $ which can be saved or set aside for other more important things.

The Goal:
Nothing new for 30 days, except for food and necessities — or adapt to whatever feels best to you!

Tips and Tricks:
✅ Take a photo of the item.
If you still want it in 30 days, purchase it then.
✅ Get your family on board. Make it a contest!
✅ Keep track of what you would have spent. Tally it up at the end of the month. Ask yourself if you’d rather have several small, inconsequential items or if you’d rather use your resources for a weekend away or fun family experience.
It’s easy to justify one purchase at a time, but it really does add up!
✅ Shopping takes time! Practice substituting other dopamine-inducing activities, Eg making a cup of tea, reading for a few minutes, going for a walk, stretching.
Self-care comes in many forms!

Hopefully, after 30 days, we’ll feel a healthy habit reset + have < things AND > space!

Now that we’ve decked the halls, who’s ready to Clear the decks? 🙋‍♀️
Do you put away holiday decor before or after New Year’s?

A few Post-Holiday organizing tips:
🎄 As you pack things up, have a donation box handy and edit out anything you don’t love. You’ll free up space and won’t even miss it next year.
🎄If you’re not ready to part ways yet, designate a 2nd string ‘benchwarmer box’. If it doesn’t make it up to the plate next year, it may have served its purpose.
🎄Test lights before putting away. Remove any strands that are broken. Add a note to the box if replacements are needed.
🎄Perform any minor repairs.
🎄Store holiday wrap with decor to avoid taking up ‘precious real estate’ with seasonal items.

🎊 As with all items, make them earn a spot in your line-up. Ask, ‘Do I need / love / want this?’ Is it worth the effort, space and energy to maintain? If not, 👋…. Time to let someone else love it.

Here’s to a Happy & Clear New Year! 💚

Who’s guilty of wishycycling?🙋‍♀️
The best time to be GREEN 💚 and mindful of our planet 🌎 is in the pre-acquisition phase with intentional purchasing. 🤔
Take a pause—
1- Does this item truly enhance my life?
2- Do I already have something that accomplishes this purpose?
3- Is there a lower-waste alternative?
4- Does acquiring this item support my current goals?
It ALL adds up.
When it comes to ‘Do I need it?’, ‘Maybe’ is usually ‘NO’ and ‘YES’ is often a ‘Maybe’.
Be mindful in acquiring and honest in disposing.
Wishcycling is just that — Wishful thinking. Not helpful.
EXPERIENCES make memories. MEMORIES are always RECYCLABLE! 💚
Happy Spring! 💐

‘Simplicity boils down to two steps: Identify the essential. Eliminate the rest.’
—Leo Babauta

What is essential to you in 2021?
When helping clients organize, edit or downsize, a crucial part of a successful outcome is to begin with a clear idea of PURPOSE and PERSPECTIVE.

Before jumping into your own project, start by asking:
What is important/essential to me? What is the result I’m looking for? Then, try these questions to help define a framework or mindset for the project:
🌞 Does this item reflect and support my life stage NOW or in the NEAR future?
🌞 Does it bring JOY or ADD MEANING?
🌞 Do I LOVE it?
If the answer is no, why you ‘shouldn’t keep it’ becomes more clear.

Often we hear:
💚 ‘I don’t love it, but it was expensive and still has the tags on it.’
If it’s been taking up space in your closet and you’ve tried it on and put it back for a year or two or six, haven’t you paid enough?
💚 ‘I don’t love it, but I think it could be worth something. I could sell it.’
Be honest. Will you? Is it worth the time, effort and brain space? Give yourself a deadline, then donate. It’s nice to give to charity something of value, not just our lowest tier cast-offs.
💚 ‘I don’t love it, but I MIGHT need it someday.’
Use the 20/20 rule. If you aren’t using it, nor plan to in the near future, and can replace it for less than $20 in less than 20 min, go ahead and pass it along. If someday ever comes, you can get another set of lobster head swizzle sticks. 🦞

If nothing else, the events of the past year have provided an opportunity to take stock and appreciate what is truly important.

Could 2021 be the year to identify what is essential and eliminate what is not?
Anyone? 💚

Just Another Missing-Our-Clients-Monday! 💚
This relic is Team CLEAR on our way to Texas for the National Senior Move Managers’ Conference — exactly 3 months ago — way back when we could fly...Without a mask!
Nothing says ‘good time’ quite like a break-out session on ‘The Opti-sized Dwelling’ or ‘Meeting the Challenge of Excess Items Dispersal’ —
aka oxygen to an organizer!

As restrictions start to lift, we can’t wait to connect with our clients again —with new health and safety protocols in place and plenty of pent-up enthusiasm! 😷

From our thought patterns to old habits to the things we allow to share our space, it comes down to this: What do we truly value?
What is essential?
Let go of the rest. 👋💚

Clutter is anything that does not support a better you, even if it’s organized. 💚
If you want to feel lighter and create more space — both physically and mentally — it’s more than just buying cute organizers at the Container Store — Not that we don’t love a good trip to the Container Store! 💚
But, if you’re struggling with too much stuff in too small of a space or just too much stuff for what you currently need, try these tips:
1- Be a good gatekeeper of your home. Guard against bringing in unnecessary items. Sooner or later, you have to haul it all back out. So, skip the part where you haul it in and shuffle it around for a few months. ✋
2- Do you love it? Is it extremely useful or meaningful? If not, 👋. Let it find the next person who needs it.
3- Is it enhancing your life and does it align with your purpose?🥰 🙌
4- Does it reflect who you are now and where you’d like to see yourself going? If not, 👋
5- Is it hard to get rid of because of how expensive it was, even though you’re not using it? If it no longer serves its purpose, you’ve paid enough. 👋
Organizing clutter is still clutter, friends. If you want to feel lighter, you have to let go. 💚
