Like humans, bees have trichromatic vision, meaning that their eyes contain 3 types of photoreceptors. Humans have blue, green, and red photoreceptors. But honey bees have blue, green, and ultraviolet photoreceptors. This means that bees can’t detect the color red, but they can see the ultraviolet spectrum.

Their ability to see ultraviolet light gives them an advantage when seeking nectar from flowers. Many flowers communicate to honey bees through unique ultraviolet patterns called nectar guides. These nectar guides create a ‘bulls eye’ effect, showing them where to go to find the nectar, thereby accomplishing pollination for the flower. Sunflowers, primroses and pansies are examples of flowers that have ultraviolet nectar guides. Their ability to see ultraviolet light allows the bees to see specific types of flowers while flying quickly, even in a field of flowers of similar shapes and colors.

Hang tight! 🤙 Honey bees form chains with one another when they’re making beeswax. It’s one of the many adorable things they do and the epitome of teamwork.

"Last night, as I was sleeping,
I dreamt —marvelous error!—
that I had a beehive
here inside my heart.
And the golden bees
were making white combs
and sweet honey
from my old failures"
~Antonio Machado, translated by Robert Bly
