On October 26, 2026, the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) announced an emergency shutdown of the NCT-Kigoro-Gigiri-Kabete pipeline for urgent repairs. The four-day supply cut will very likely disrupt healthcare operations at major facilities like Kenyatta National Hospital and force commercial hubs, international agencies, and residents to rely on private water sourcing. The temporary closure of the pipeline will very likely increase the risk of waterborne diseases.

This week, the Africa team analyzed how terrorist groups and state forces are using new technologies to reshape conflict in West Africa and the Sahel. In Nigeria, ISWAP and Boko Haram used commercial AI models to plan attacks, very likely expanding the groups’ recruitment reach and their ability to replace lost weapons expertise. In Mali, Malian forces and Russia’s Africa Corps were accused of human rights abuses and indiscriminate drone strikes on civilians, likely pushing communities closer to jihadist groups and weakening Russia’s reputation as a security partner in the Sahel.
