What is Spiritual Strength?

Spiritual strength is not necessarily about religion. It’s about recognizing and tapping into a private, transcendent, sacred force that each of us possesses.

I’ve heard “religion is a person sitting in church thinking about kayaking. Spirituality is a person sitting in a kayak thinking about God.”

Spiritual strength does not come passively. You achieve spiritual strength through pain and suffering (both internal and external), so you can be dedicated to your beliefs and certain about your competencies and skills.

I feel spiritual when I work out or run. Taking a closer look, I don't feel spiritual in the act of lifting or running. I feel spiritual in between sets when I'm breathing.

Research shows that the way we breathe decisively influences autonomic and pain processing. (Just ask Mission Six Zero Instructor Jon Macaskill.)

The is not just a physical workout program, it's a whole person workout program.

Today, as part of our weekly Valor Challenge, we honored one of my teammates, Rob Pirelli, who was KIA in 2007.

Valor Challenge # 1

Deliberate Discomfort Challenge Day Four (JVC - 6/6)

What impacted me today was.... Meaningful Connections

I had an amazing conversation with a friend that I far too seldom speak with. As I am speaking with him, I think to myself, "why the hell don't we talk more often?!"

I find myself having a blast in this conversation... we are laughing, telling jokes, catching up... and then, in the midst of the conversation, as I tell him the business problems I am facing, he just magically happens to have all the solutions.

Why are meaning connections important?

Because it's a two-way street. You are both giving and receiving from your relationship. You share common interests, values, and interests. You aren't uncomfortable getting a little vulnerable.

Of all of the experiences we need to survive and thrive in life, it is the experience of relating to others that is the most meaningful.

Move past the superficial conversations. Go deep. Get uncomfortable.

Deliberate Discomfort Challenge Day Three

JVC - 6/6

What impacted me today was.... Physical Toughness.

Those sprints were a beast! I pushed myself hard today.

Physical Toughness:

🌑 is the ability to keep moving forward when you are tired, dealing with pain, don't feel like it, or are being challenged.

🌑 is withstanding temporary pain and discomfort

🌑 requires you to be more conscious in the moment because the moment is short and the pain intensifies your focus.

🌑 is a by-product of our active decisions

🌑 is a skill that can be trained and cultivated. How?

Choose hard things before hard things choose you. Condition your body to withstand discomfort and tolerate environments that would normally cause you to quit. Endure the "hard winter training."

Want to go fast? Go Alone. Want to go far? Go with a team. Remind yourself that your team is counting on you and you refuse to let them down. Research suggests that positive emotions connected with your teammates can minimize the intensity of the pain you feel.

Push yourself past your comfort zone. Not only will it save you pain in the long run, but it will also allow you to absorb more punishment which makes you that much harder to bring down.

Deliberate Discomfort Challenge Day Two

Rounds complete on Day Two (JVC - 6/6)!

What impacted me today was.... Loyalty

Every year Leigh Steinberg and Christopher Cabott host a Super Bowl party. This year, due to COVID, the party was virtual (and early).

During the party, I am responsible for connecting Steinberg Sports Agents and National Football League (NFL) players with deployed SOF teams to facilitate a virtual conversation of gratitude.

This year, I had SOF teams deployed to both Afghanistan and Africa prepped for this call.
....Except, these teams didn't show up for the call. I don't know why, but I suspect it had something to do with the current mission optempo.

I kept trying to reach them but was ultimately unsuccessful.

What do I do? Figure a way to get the job done.

I called MSG (Ret.) Jeff Adams and LTC Dan Alder out of the blue and asked them to serve as a proxy. Without hesitation, they took the time to sit down and speak with Steinberg Sports & Entertainment for two hours.

I thanked them both and said, "I owe you."

Jeff's response: "No, you don't, bro. It's what tribes do."

Deliberate Discomfort Challenge Day One

Day One is in the books. (JVC - 6/6)

As per our rules, I am going to share something from the challenge that impacted me today.

What impacted me today was.... Community

Day one was tough (it always is). I see nearly 200 people in our Deliberate Discomfort community posting about how emotional today was. How hard today was. How scared people are. How much they are doubting themselves.

But they keep moving forward.

I see people waking up at 3:15 am. I see people encouraging one another. I see people supporting and connecting. I see people LOOKING UP and focusing on others rather than on themselves.

I see people expressing their gratitude for this challenge and for the people in it. I see encouraging posts. I see the POWER of tribe.

It's beautiful.

I am not going to let them down. I am going to help them finish this challenge. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. One day at a time.

Day # 2 tomorrow.

When the pressure is on and you’re on a team, it’s never about you.

In these difficult moments, when you are confronted with situations that make or break individuals and teams, we find our collective purpose.

Your purpose is to make the team succeed. Misery is suffering without a purpose. The guys who make it through these types of SOF courses are the guys who experience an aha moment. When they realize that they’re not alone.

That they are on a team and the success of the team is more important than their own personal success. The people who don’t make it are the guys who are self-centered, who don’t risk any energy that doesn’t immediately serve their own interests.

The people who don’t look up.

The secret to the elite mind-set of Special Operations Forces, no matter how many books you read or podcasts you listen to, is to look up.

You can't run a mistake-free organization.

Research shows that people in high performing cultures learn more effectively from their mistakes than from their successes.

Let's face it... You are going to make mistakes. I promise you that. Mistakes are OK if they are aggressive mistakes. In fact, sometimes mistakes show you are willing to take risks.

All mistakes are not equal, however. Avoid mistakes like being unprepared, focusing on personal gain, or anything with malintent behind it. Don't tolerate sloppy mistakes—being negligent, lazy, or stupid.

Let mistakes lapse if you are focusing on three things— fighting, surviving, and winning. Define what those three things mean for your organization.

Adversity is needed to overcome challenges in life. Flexibility is important, as we can’t move forward if we stay in the same place. Without making mistakes, we would stay in our comfort zone, which leads us to inflexibility when things don’t work the way we want them to.

You made a mistake?

Good.

Be willing to learn from it. Knowledge from mistakes depreciates more slowly than knowledge from success. The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.

2021 - I embrace you.

Not because 2020 was a bad year....with respect, 2020 was one of the best years of my life. And not because of what I accomplished, but because of what my team accomplished.

Sure, we set goals. We made resolutions for 2021, but we broke it down small daily, weekly, and monthly actions we needed to take that led to the outcomes we wanted.

That is where YOUR focus should lie. That is what YOU can control. That is how great things are accomplished.

One of my (many) goals this year is to post something meaningful on social media every day.

What are you going to do in 2021? Well, that's completely up to you. One thing you could do is join our team for the first Deliberate Discomfort Challenge.

Join the team here: https://lnkd.in/d9KCmpY

We begin our first class on January 4.

If we wait until we are ready, we'll be waiting for the rest of our lives.

Don't abide. Attack.

I challenge you...

Mission Six Zero's DELIBERATE DISCOMFORT CHALLENGE is now live.

This will be one of the hardest things you have ever done because YOU choose YOUR level of discomfort... and nobody is harder on ourselves than ourselves.

You're not doing this alone. You will be doing this as a team AND with mentors checking in with you every single day for 60 consecutive days.

This also isn't just a physical workout program. This is a whole person workout program.

Looking for a New Year's resolution? A new year a new you? Sick of saying that year after year and never doing anything about it?

What are you waiting for?

2021 is your year.

We start Monday, January 4, 2021.

Do Something about it!
