Sankofa is an Akan word from the Ghanaian Akan people that translates to "go back and fetch it." The Sankofa bird is known for having its feet planted forward while its head is turned backwards and gently holding an egg in its mouth. That is, we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has taught us and what we can achieve out of full potential as we move forward. When the word "tumi," which means "power," is added, "sankofa tumi" can now be translated to "return to power." This is understood to mean that knowledge and wisdom from the past has the power to move us forward when we learn it. We will understand we have always had the power to go back and get what was forgotten, or left behind, and to continue moving forward with our future.

Welcome to Sankofa Tumi! We are so happy to have you be apart of our community. Founded by Njeri Shomari, LMSW, Sankofa Tumi was launched for the sole purpose of providing education, skills, and resources to our clients to allow them to continue moving forward with their future. We specialize in skill-based Mental Health First Aid, Leadership Development, Family Life Education and Support, and more. Providing essential, one-of-a-kind services that assist our community in achieving their goals is our upmost importance.
