The Obama campaigns in '08 and '12 have vastly expanded the popularity of statistical regression modeling for targeting political communications. There are a number of firms who have recently popped up offering this service and are commanding enormous fees with the promise of the magical formula that will help campaigns win. The problem most campaigns with limited resources face is how do you pay for the magic.

In 2005 we invented and have perfected the concept of virtual predictive dialing allowing volunteer phone banks to operate with the same efficiency as large telemarketing firms.

Modeling is an important development, particularly as it applies to all forms of direct voter contact. Voter ID programs have become increasingly more difficult as more and more voters either don't answer their phones, don't answer questions posed by campaigns or simply no longer have land lines. It is essentially impossible for a modern campaign to successfully identify enough voters over the phone to meet their vote goals. This is why it is exceedingly important to model your voter universe.
Our process is really quite simple. We take the answers to simple surveys of between 2 and 10 questions, identify an appropriate statistical regression formula using a variety of available demographic and geographic variables and score your likely voting population with a probability score between 0 to 100 of the likelihood that each individual on the file will vote for a particular candidate.
Instead of a campaign trying to identify every likely voter we are able to take a subset of all voters and accurately predict which voters have a high probability of voting one way or another. The cost saving is enormous and the ability for the campaign to save resources by more accurately targeting voters with direct mail, door-to-door canvassing and phone calling is a giant step.
The likely cost of collecting, analyzing and scoring your likely voter universe for typical Congressional race is between $3,700 and $6,000 depending on the length of the survey. Many modeling companies charge $30,000 for the same results. We think modeling should be the agent that saves campaign resources, not one that blows the budget. By executing this modeling program in advance of other paid communication you will likely cut those costs by an additional 30% and possibly more.
