Happy Emancipation Day!
On July 3, 1848 General Buddhoe led an army of enslaved Africans on St. Croix of the then Danish West Indies in a confrontation called The St. Croix Revolt. The Danish governor, General Peter von Scholten, became aware of the brewing revolt, was frightened of possible battle, so before General Buddhoe and his army reached government house Von Scholten, conceded and proclaimed, that “All unfree in the Danish West-Indian Islands are from today emancipated.”
The first bloodless emancipation of enslaved Africans. Today we celebrate the 174th anniversary of that historic event.

I remember and honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to the United States Civil Rights Movement and to International Human Rights. I remember his efforts in ensuring the United States is a place where all people of all races can enjoy the same freedoms and opportunities. Those ideals and desire continue to be an inspiration for all of us.
