During the DIW DR Pilot School May, 2025 trip, students gathered at the Universidad Católica de Santo Domingo. Here a 2 hour, Nutrition for Dancers seminar took place with chef and university director of culinary arts, Rousanna Urraca.
The first hour consisted of a PowerPoint
presentation that explained various healthy foods that are nutritious, colorful, fun and not expensive. She explained how to prepare food combinations that are smart choices. I joined Chef Urraca and explained how certain foods, work specific parts of the body (energy, memory, muscle recovery, hydration).
Following this presentation the students made their way to the professional kitchen where the seminar continued. The students observed how a variety of dishes are elaborated and had a tasting of a variety of nutritious, fun foods they can make themselves.
Everyone enthusiastically put together a plate and sat outside amongst the university grounds tables.
This was also a very important part of the excursion because some of the students had never been to an institution of higher education.
These students are from four different neighborhoods of scarce resources. Some of these children never make it through high school, much less university. Many were in awe of seeing the number of students there on a Saturday.
This opportunity was taken to explain to the students how there are a variety of careers in the arts and dance world. It was explained how they can also combine careers and pursue more than one
career at a time. For example, dance and nutrition or production, stage design, administration and so on.
This first of many seminars planned within the project was a complete success!
