Finding Light in the Darkness: Mental Health in a Time of Uncertainty
Thirty days into a government shutdown, many of us are running on emotional fumes. When systems we depend on falter, it can shake something deep within us — our sense of stability, safety, and faith in the world around us.
But even in the middle of this uncertainty, I’ve noticed something remarkable happening. In my own town, people are mobilizing. Business owners are offering free food to families who will lose SNAP benefits. Friends are gathering donations for food banks and churches. Neighbors are standing in the gap where our systems fall short.
Every time I start to lose faith in humanity, these moments pull me back. They remind me that the heart of humanity hasn’t disappeared — it’s alive and well in the everyday kindness of people who choose love over apathy.
From a mental health standpoint, this matters. Despair can isolate us, while connection can heal us. Anxiety thrives on uncertainty, but hope grows when we witness compassion. This kind of collective empathy doesn’t erase the hardship, but it helps us bear it together.
Maybe this is what resilience really looks like — not pretending everything is fine, but choosing to keep showing up for one another anyway. If you find yourself losing hope, look closer. There are helpers all around you. Let their light guide you back to your own.
