For over two decades, I’ve believed that sustainable school improvement happens when leadership is intentional, relationships are strong, and systems are aligned around students. The results across multiple districts continue to reinforce that belief.
As a principal in Mount Vernon, our team reduced suspensions from over 400 to just 11 while increasing literacy proficiency by 21% and math proficiency by 12%.
In Arlington, literacy and math achievement both increased in double digits through a focused approach to instructional leadership, culture, and accountability.
As Assistant Superintendent in Philadelphia, three schools posted double-digit literacy gains, while 10 of 13 schools demonstrated measurable literacy growth as a result of our literacy leadership academy with support from Scholastic.
These outcomes were not driven by programs alone. They came from:
• Building strong leadership capacity
• Creating cultures of trust and belonging
• Using data with purpose
• Supporting teachers intentionally
• Centering wellness while maintaining high expectations
