Two hundred and fifty years ago on July 2, 1776, Congress voted for independence (the Declaration of Independence was then signed on July 4). Declaration co-author John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail the next day that future generations of Americans would ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ฏ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต โ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐น๐น๐, ๐ฏ๐ผ๐ป๐ณ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ถ๐น๐น๐๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐๐ผ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ผ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ.โ
He was right! And the leadership of our founding generation has outlasted them and is now in our hands.
What Adams also understood was that declaring and sustaining liberty would require more than celebrationโit would require sacrifice, work, and reflection. And it still requires it today.
