Busy weekend for WFPD. Saturday Morning training was conducted at the Waverly Swim Club Pool. They allow us to practice using our trucks like we do with most rural structure fires. We typically use portable ponds and tankers to supply water in these situations. Whereas inside the city limits, we have hydrants that are pressurized so the water comes to your truck as soon as the hydrant is opened. Using rural static water sources, we have to learn how to prime our pumps to draft the water from portable ponds, streams or lakes. Using the pool as a water source allows us to test our ability to setup getting water from a source a little further away than you might like. So having to use additional hoses to reach the water only increases the difficulty of getting water. We spent several hours pumping water at nearly 350 gals per minute to get the pool empty. And it’s great to see our equipment working as planned! Plus there are always a lot of tips and tricks that can be passed along to getting a truck setup to draft water and this is a great chance to practice these skills without the stress of being on a call, when you’re needing water ASAP. While we waited we also got some hose time washing down the walls, floor and gutters of the pool to help the members of the pool get ready for the annual cleanup of the pool and grounds before they open for the 2026 season.
