Buying insulation for under your concrete slab? Compare R-value and PSI—not just board thickness.

Here’s a comparison of 4′ × 8′ sheets:

✅ 2″ faced EPS: R-8.8 — $33.48
✅ 2 5/16″ faced EPS: Approximately R-10.2 — $36
✅ 2 5/16″ unfaced EPS: Approximately R-10.2 — $32.34
🔹 2″ XPS: Typically R-10 — $45 example price

All options in this comparison are 25 PSI. By choosing slightly thicker EPS, you can get comparable R-value and save $9–$12.66 per sheet compared with XPS at $45!

We supply dense, below-grade EPS for under-slab applications. Density and strength matter—roofing EPS is usually lighter material.

🏗️ Why Does 25 PSI Insulation Matter Below Grade?

Not all EPS foam is designed for the same application. Lightweight EPS commonly used in commercial roofing is often around 1-pound density. Below-grade and under-slab projects generally require a stronger product.

That’s why Source Mountain Supply recommends 25 PSI EPS—approximately 2-pound density—for applications such as:

✅ Heated concrete slabs
✅ Radiant-floor systems
✅ Foundations and below-grade walls
✅ Pole barns, garages and shops
✅ Projects supporting heavier loads

The higher density provides greater compressive strength, helping the insulation withstand construction activity and long-term loads beneath the concrete.

For projects requiring even greater load-bearing capacity, we can also supply 40 PSI and 60 PSI EPS in custom thicknesses and sizes.

Choosing insulation based only on thickness or R-value can be a costly mistake. Always confirm the product’s compressive strength and density for the intended application.

🧱 Not All Foam Board Is the Same

When choosing rigid insulation, don’t compare products based only on thickness. Compressive strength, long-term R-value, moisture performance, and application all matter.

InsulFoam IX is a Type IX EPS insulation with:

✅ 25 PSI compressive strength
✅ R-5.0 per inch at 25°F
✅ R-4.76 per inch at 40°F
✅ R-4.35 per inch at 75°F
✅ Stable long-term R-value with no thermal drift
✅ Standard and custom thicknesses available
✅ Options for faced or unfaced sheets

Unlike XPS, EPS does not rely on trapped blowing-agent gases to maintain its thermal performance. This allows EPS to deliver a stable R-value throughout its service life. EPS can also dry more effectively after prolonged moisture exposure.

Common applications include:

• Under concrete slabs
• Foundations and basement walls
• Continuous below-grade insulation
• Exterior walls
• Commercial roofing
• Cold-storage construction

The right insulation depends on the application. Roofing EPS is commonly a lower-density material, while below-grade and under-slab projects typically require denser products such as 25 PSI EPS.
