Last week in Beverly Glen we opened a Sub-Zero freezer where the owner was sure the ice maker had died. What we found behind the panel was a sheet of ice across the evaporator β the defrost system had quit working weeks earlier.
Here is the chain nobody sees. Frost stops clearing off the coil. Airflow drops. The freezer slowly warms above its setpoint. And an ice maker will simply refuse to harvest when it is not cold enough. The customer sees "no ice." The actual fault is two steps upstream.
On this unit we installed a new ice maker assembly and a new defrost terminator, ran a full defrost cycle, and confirmed the cabinet was holding temperature before we packed up. Ice production came back the same day.
Why this matters to you: no ice is often the earliest signal your freezer is losing temperature. Everything else still looks fine β the light works, the door closes, the food seems frozen. By the time it obviously fails, you are usually looking at a bigger repair.
If your ice production has slowed down or stopped, or the freezer feels warmer than it used to, get it looked at now rather than in three weeks.
