REMEMBER THE REASON

In the US today, we are celebrating Memorial Day, a federal holiday that celebrates and honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Observed every year on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day in a nod to the tradition of placing flowers or other decorative displays at gravesites.

The origins of Memorial Day date back to the Civil War, which claimed the lives of some 620,000 soldiers. In the aftermath, devastated communities sought to honor their dead. The commemoration caught on across the nation, eventually expanding to honor fallen soldiers from all wars, but it wasn’t until 1971 that Memorial Day became a federal holiday.

Today, many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

Networking isn’t a loud person’s game. If you dread a room full of strangers, you actually have a secret advantage: curiosity. Introverts are natural listeners, and listening is the most powerful tool in the digital landscape. You don't need to be the loudest voice in the feed to be the most connected. You just need to be the most interested. How do you prefer to start a conversation when you're feeling a bit shy?

You do not need a name tag or a hotel ballroom to build your network.
I’ve made some of my best professional connections in the post office line or while waiting for a flight. Why? Because I was a person first and a specialist second. We are all in transition, and we all need a community. If you stop hunting for leads and start looking for people, the opportunities find you. Have you ever found a client in a totally non-business setting?_____________________________________

Let’s be honest: when was the last time you actually enjoyed someone’s elevator pitch? Most of us just wait for the person to finish so we can talk. In my new book, Networking From the Ground Up, I talk about why we need to retire the pitch entirely. Real business doesn’t start with a monologue; it starts with a bridge.
Swap your pitch for a genuine question this week and see how the energy changes. What is your go-to question when meeting someone new?

SOMETIMES SILENCE IS GOOD
I’ve not posted since my departure on Tuesday for the 2026 Women’s Power Summit in Austin, hosted by the Center for Women in Law. This was an outstanding event, keeping me very busy with a presentation followed by a couple of days of reviewing LinkedIn profiles with attendees.

Between that and promoting my new book, ‘Networking from the Ground Up’, attending a few networking events, fabulous dinners (and hearing a few incredible keynote speakers), I’ve not had two minutes to spare!

On the first day, I delivered my LinkedIn presentation to a group of accomplished General Counsels - thank you, Beth Hecht- followed by a dynamic opening session and dinner out. If in Austin, I highly recommend Dean’s Italian Steakhouse - I was intrigued seeing Salmon Wellington on their menu. It was incredible! Thank you to Yvonne Puig for inviting me to join your group of 8 esteemed colleagues. What fabulous stories everyone shared!

All day Thursday with profile reviews - we love that value-add for event attendees. The luncheon speaker was Cynt Marshall, former CEO of the Dallas Mavericks, delivering several amazing stories of challenges met with perseverance and success. (Thank you for my crown!)

The Legacy dinner featured Amy Purdy, Paralympic Snowboard medalist. Her story of survival and a comeback to the sport she loved after losing both legs was nothing short of remarkable. I saw her dance on those prosthetics back on DWTS in 2014. She & Derek Hough placed second for the mirror ball trophy. Incredible! I met her and her husband, Daniel Gale, afterward. A powerhouse couple for the sport & their company, ADAPTIVE ACTION SPORTS INC.

Friday was a half-day of profile reviews, ending with an opportunity to sit in on a final ‘wow’ panel, moderated by Beth Hecht, that included Tina Tchen with the Obama Foundation, Sarah Shadonix with Scout & Cellar Wines, and award-winning author Pamela Samuels Young. These women all began their careers with paths in the law, which led to extraordinary leadership roles outside the traditional legal field.

This was a truly impactful event. Personal thanks to Beth Hecht for the invitation to participate for a second time. It was so nice to see you again, Hilda Galvan, Yvonne Puig, Betty Ungerman, Jennifer Banda, and Abigail Hemphill! And wonderful to meet with many new connections. Shoutout to the event Registration team: Sofia Urcuyo, Rooha Hagharmehdiabadi, Joy Peng, and Julieta Martinez for doing a great job.
Enjoy the pics!
