color theory is actually crazy. there were moments in between spiraling and deep diving into complementary/analog colors where I was having fun figuring out which colors work together and which ones could totally ruin the look you’re going for.

the pressure of learning a whole new skill on a banner made for someone else is a risk, but one I’m willing to take to keep practicing, learning, and growing!

I’ve only ever had one client straight up reject my original design. He’s three.

So I’m at my best friend’s house sketching her son’s birthday banner (he’s turning three, he’s obsessed with Woody, you see where this is going). My first version had him in a modern-day cowboy fit. White tee, jeans, hat, and boots. Subtle. Tasteful. Wrong, apparently.

I was gonna surprise him, but my excitement got the best of me, and I asked him if he wanted to see what I had been working on (big mistake, but also a huge lesson in mockup approvals). I played him the timelapse of my sketch, and earlier in that sketch I had him in the full Woody costume, yellow plaid shirt, sheriff badge, the whole thing, before I changed my mind. It was on screen for maybe half a second. HALF A SECOND. This child looks at me and goes, “Where did my costume go?”

And I just stood there. Silent. Because I knew my work wasn’t done.

Went home, painted the costume back on, and honestly? He was right. It looks way better. Never doubt a three-year-old with a vision.

Happy birthday, buddy. Don’t ever change (the design, again, please, I beg of you)

Swipe to the last slide to watch the timelapse and see just how fast he clocked that his Woody shirt was missing😅

I’ve always assumed the black dot on the Hungry Caterpillar was his nose. It never occurred to me that it could also be seen as his mouth until I was painting him today.

Now I can’t unsee it, and his entire personality changes depending on how you look at him.

Is there anyone out there who thought it was his mouth?

Either way, he’s still the cutest!

Got my first official rush order this week… except it ended up being TWO banners with a 2 day turnaround and one had a gingham border 😅

idk if I’m just a psycho but the time crunch was actually kinda fun

Anyways here’s how they turned out!
(pretend the gingham banner sides are cut because I forgot to take another pic 🤦🏼‍♀️

a little reminder that creative growth usually looks messy first

this was my first time really trying to paint a more realistic style banner and there were SO many moments where it wasn’t matching the vision in my head. i almost gave up on it multiple times, but i kept layering, tweaking, repainting, and trusting the process.

I might actually be emotionally attached to this one 😬🤷🏼‍♀️
