Join us March 17th for a featured presentation from Justin Roberts, owner of LevelUp Concrete Leveling. Justin helps homeowners, businesses, and contractors across South-Central Kansas restore uneven sidewalks, driveways, patios, and slabs using specialized concrete lifting and mudjacking techniques that raise and stabilize existing concrete rather than replacing it. 

During his presentation, Justin will be doing a live demonstration of concrete leveling using mudjacking technology right out front of the Evergy Building, showing how small drilled holes allow material to be injected beneath the slab to lift and level it safely and efficiently.

Strong businesses aren’t built by hard work alone. They’re built by building better systems.

At this week’s BNI meeting, Payton Sporleder, owner of Titan Mechanical, delivered an education session that every business owner in the room could apply immediately.

His message was direct: when an owner spends most of their time as the technician — doing the day-to-day work — growth slows. Without stepping into the roles of entrepreneur and manager, the business becomes dependent on the owner for everything.

He broke down the three roles every owner must balance:
• Entrepreneur — vision and direction
• Manager — systems and structure
• Technician — ex*****on

Most small businesses get stuck in ex*****on mode. Systems are neglected. Structure becomes reactive. And eventually, the owner becomes the constraint.

He also challenged the room to think differently about recruiting. Many businesses build detailed marketing systems to attract customers — offers, follow-up, nurturing, objection handling — yet have no comparable system for attracting and retaining employees.

Recruiting and retention should be just as intentional as customer acquisition.

One of the most practical tools he shared was the STAR checklist — five simple questions to ask before blaming someone for a task not getting done:

Did they know it needed to be done?
Did they know exactly what was expected?
Did they know how to do it?
Did they know when it was due?
Were circumstances in the way?

More often than not, the issue isn’t the person — it’s the system.
